Roman Reigns has become synonymous with WrestleMania. The OTC has the most Mania main events to his name, and he will add another to his long list this year. Reigns will battle CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship at Mania 42: Night Two.
The 2026 Royal Rumble winner has battled some of the biggest names in sports entertainment under the bright lights of The Show of Shows. His first two Mania appearances were with The Shield. In the last 13 years, Reigns has only skipped one Mania event, which was WrestleMania 36, due to valid health concerns surrounding the pandemic.
Given the long list of matches, it was worth noting a few honorable mentions:
On that note, let’s look at 5 of Reigns’ greatest matches at The Grandest Stage of Them All.
WrestleMania XL was universally praised. From the build-up to the hype to the actual event, WWE was on fire in the first few months of 2024. The enthralling saga between The Bloodline and Cody Rhodes was an essential part of this success. Months of build-up culminated in a colossal Tag Team Match at The Show of Shows.
Roman Reigns was up against two of his greatest rivals in Cody Rhodes and Seth “Freakin” Rollins. Fortunately, the Tribal Chief had The Final Boss, The Rock’s insanely entertaining authority figure persona, on his side. The Brahma Bull took issue with Rhodes and the fans for spoiling his massive dream match with Reigns. The Final Boss took the storyline to the next level with his insults and brutal beatdowns.
Furthermore, The Rock raised the stakes of the Tag Team main event. If Rhodes lost, his title match with Reigns would be contested under the Bloodline Rules. Fans were expecting chaos and drama, and that’s what they got when the bell rang.
The match had many iconic moments. The Final Boss was trash mouthing his opponents throughout the bout, and sold an unintended Spear like a million bucks. In the end, he whacked Rhodes with his belt and crushed him with the People’s Elbow for the victory.
Reigns may not have been the star of this match, but he was the greatest benefactor. The Rock and Roman Reigns made a pretty fine team, and it was impossible to deny them at WrestleMania 40: Saturday.
Roman Reigns, CM Punk, and Seth Rollins absolutely hate each other, but their fates were intricately intertwined. There was too much history and disdain to ignore, and WWE finally booked the long-awaited Triple Threat as the main event of WrestleMania 41: Night One.
If the mutual disdain wasn’t enough, Paul Heyman’s true allegiance added another element of intrigue to this rivalry. Heyman walked into the match as Punk’s best friend rather than Reigns’ “Wise Man.” With so many combustible elements involved, the WWE Universe could sense something memorable.
As expected, the veterans tore the house down and stole the show. Reigns was particularly fired up, dishing out immense punishment to his opponents, including Powerbombs through the announce table. There were near falls, submission moves, and chair shots, but it was the ending that had everyone talking.
With both his guys laid out, Heyman had a choice to make. The Father of ECW first passed the chair to Punk, only to turn on the Straight Edge Superstar and side with the OTC. However, Heyman wasn’t done yet. The Hall of Famer sold his soul to the devil, who just happened to be Seth “Freakin” Rollins that night.
It was a shocking moment that laid the foundation for the Vision, which would dominate RAW for much of 2025. For a WrestleMania that didn’t have many great moments, Reigns vs. Rollins vs. Punk may have been the saving grace.
Professional wrestling is a lot about masterful storytelling. Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes told one of the best stories of the modern era in their first battle at WrestleMania 39. The American Nightmare was on a fairytale run with all the momentum looking set to finish his story.2
However, Dusty Rhodes’ son faced one of the greatest students under The American Dream’s learning tree. The Tribal Chief was on an unprecedented run of dominance and was closing in on a thousand days as World Champion. Rhodes faced a tall task, but he had the crowd’s support and the emotional fuel to conquer Reigns.
This was the first time fans got a taste of the in-ring chemistry between Rhodes and Reigns, and the wrestling world was thoroughly impressed. Reigns’ slow, methodical, power-based style contrasted nicely with Rhodes’ fast-paced, athletic style. Both men took each other to the limit until the match reached its chaotic climax.
The referee was knocked out, allowing The Usos to interfere and nail Rhodes with the 1D. Unfortunately for The Bloodline, Rhodes had friends too. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn ran down to neutralize The Usos and sent them into retreat. The playing field was level once again, and Rhodes had the upper hand.
The American Nightmare was one Cross Rhodes away from finishing his story, but Solo Sikoa pounced on him with a Samoan Spike. This allowed the Tribal Chief to hit one last Spear to retain the championship. At the time, the decision was highly contested, but Triple H had a plan.
#2. Roman Reigns (c) vs. Cody Rhodes in a Bloodline Rules Match for the WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 40: Night Two
If you want to show a non-wrestling fan what WWE is all about, you should show them Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes II at WrestleMania 40. After The Rock pinned Rhodes on Night One, The American Nightmare’s fate was sealed as he had to face impossible odds in a Bloodline Rules match. He was truly in the Endgame.
It had all the ingredients of a generational match: action, storytelling, drama, and surprises. Reigns and Rhodes started slow, but they soon dug deep into their respective playbooks. However, both men had to bring something extra special, and they began stealing each other’s finishers for a few near falls.
The excitement was in the air, and we could feel a fever pitch. The Usos came out first, and their night ended with Jey Spearing Jimmy off the stage. Next, Solo Sikoa emerged to do Reigns’ dirty work yet again, but John Cena ran down to take down the Enforcer.
In an iconic revisit from their generational clash at WrestleMania 28, The Final Boss came down and stared down the Champ. Cena took a Rock Bottom, turning the tide towards The Bloodline yet again. The Shield’s music hit, and Seth Rollins, who promised to be Rhodes’ Shield, entered the fray only to eat a Superman Punch.
It looked as if The Bloodline would reign supreme again, but the gong hit, and The Undertaker Chokeslammed the Final Boss into oblivion. In the end, Rollins sacrificed himself for Rhodes, and The American Nightmare finally finished his story. It was an emotional, feel-good moment that fans will never forget anytime soon.
By the time WrestleMania 31 had rolled out, WWE was committed to making Roman Reigns its poster boy. Unfortunately, fans heavily rejected his push, but the company was unrelenting in its pursuit. Thus, when the Big Dog walked out to face Brock Lesnar at Mania 31, he was heavily booed.
At the time, there were questions regarding Reigns’ talent, too. However, when the show finished, Reigns had fewer doubters. Almost everyone expected Reigns vs. Lesnar I to be a colossal failure, but they couldn’t have been more wrong. It was an absolute war, and Levi’s Stadium was rocking.
Lesnar manhandled the Big Dog, taking him to Suplex City and devouring him with stiff Clotheslines. Reigns wasn’t backing down as he kept coming back for more. The Big Dog found a tiny opening when he sent The Beast into the ring post. The champion was reeling and drowning in his own blood.
Reigns fired back with a flurry of Superman Punches and Spears, but was cut off with an F5. Both men were down, and the match was wide open. Seth Rollins’ music hit, and he ran down with the Money in the Bank contract. “The Future” cashed in during the main event and walked out with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
