AEW's creative approach has long been a target of criticism. The company has proven capable of developing stars. However, they've proven incapable of maintaining a wrestler's momentum once star status has been achieved.
MJF, The Acclaimed, Swerve Strickland, Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay have all fallen victim to AEW's inability to build on their initial success. When factoring in multiple storylines that are failing to move the needle, it's clear that AEW's creative team needs some more experienced voices.
That's where WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray believes he can help. Speaking on a recent episode of "Busted Open Radio," Ray shared his thought process on how he could help Tony Khan streamline his creative process.
"I would never want Tony Khan to relinquish his part in creative. I would want to work with Tony Khan on creative," Ray said. "Tony Khan is a matchmaker. What I would do with Tony is sit down at a table with Tony, and I would go, 'Tony, give me your top three fantasy matches that you want to do in three months, six months, a year.' And when he hands me those fantasy matches, I'll build stories around them. That's how you work together...I would never suggest that Tony Khan give up the pencil completely."
While Ray might not be AEW's fans' first choice for a creative role, his experience is what's missing from the company's current talent pool. Khan has proven to be exceptional at putting matches together. However, his ability to create and maintain compelling stories has fallen short.
AEW is in a period of transition. It has the talent to seriously threaten the status quo and put additional pressure on WWE. However, until it can build stories that appeal to the masses, the company will continue to struggle to generate new fans and a broader interest in it.
