Before his second run with WWE in 2023, Carlito had two opportunities to return to the company. The star of the Ruthless Aggression era and now former member of The Judgment Day recently spoke about those two chances and why neither came to fruition.
As a guest on the podcast Refin’ It Up, Carlito revealed that his first chance to return to WWE was in 2015, just five years after being released from the company in 2010. It never happened because the offer, which Carlito didn’t disclose, was too low. WWE then didn’t accept his counteroffer. He said:
"During that time, they offered me a contract, but they low-balled me. I think it was 2015. They low-balled me, and then they didn’t even take a counter-offer. They didn’t even call me for the counter-offer. I said, ‘Alright, then, you can go fornicate yourself.’ (h/t: Fightful)
Carlito later told hosts Brian Hebner, Jimmy Korderas, and Daniel Spencer that after his 2021 Royal Rumble appearance, WWE had offered him a Legends contract. That’s when his lawyer stepped in and wasn’t quite impressed with WWE’s offer.
“After the (2021 Royal) Rumble, they offered me a Legends contract, and it was just a terrible — I gave it to my lawyer, he goes, ‘Bro, don’t even sign this,’ and it was (Mark) Carrano, and he didn’t even call me. This time was by text. So I was like, ‘Okay, I see how serious this is.’ I was like, ‘Alright, thanks buddy,’ and I kept it professional again. I said, ‘No, thank you. I have to pass’ or whatever.”
This past May, the company decided not to renew Carlito’s contract. The former Judgment Day member had opened up about his second run with WWE, noting how it was “a lot more positive” than his first run, though he was still unhappy with not getting a proper send-off.
For now, Carlito has been keeping himself busy wrestling for independent promotions, including the World Wrestling Council and Awesome Championship Wrestling.
