Chris Jericho returning to WWE is the rumor that won't go away and the latest development involving the AEW star could be the biggest hint yet. It's believed that Jericho's contract with AEW expires at the end of the year, and this has fuelled talk of a possible Royal Rumble return in January.
If Jericho does leave AEW, he'll leave arguably at the worst period of his time with the promotion, as fans grew frustrated with his booking and storylines. Some coined the term 'the Jericho Vortex,' suggesting that talent who work a program with the 54-year-old get dragged into an unnecessarily long feud with no benefit.
Jericho was seemingly set to use this as part of his gimmick, arguing that working with him had helped his rivals, such as MJF and Sammy Guevara, get over. But the idea has been ditched amid growing speculation over a possible AEW departure and WWE return.
The former Undisputed WWE Champion initially filed for 'The Jericho Vortex' back in April 2024. But United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) searches show that this has now been abandoned.
This will only further raise suspicions that he is on his way out of AEW, where he's spent the past six years and was the inaugural AEW World Champion. His final appearance for the company may have come in April 2025.
A Jericho return opens the possibility to some intriguing rivalries and matches, albeit in the dying embers of his career. One of those could come against LA Knight, who has still to truly reach the main event picture in WWE despite fans clearly backing the 42-year-old.
Bully Ray thinks WWE re-signing Jericho will be worth it alone if they place him in a feud with Knight. The WWE Hall of Famer said on Busted Open Radio:
"I would bring Chris Jericho back to the WWE just to work with LA Knight. If you told me that that was the only thing he was going to do for one year, that’s a good enough reason alone."
Knight has been around the World Heavyweight Championship picture but failed to win a battle royal to face CM Punk for the vacated title at Saturday Night's Main Event on Saturday (November 1). He has feuded with some of the promotion's top heels over the past year, including Logan Paul and Jacob Fatu.
Jericho has spoken in the past about wanting to revive his feud with Kevin Owens when asked about a possible WWE return. But the Prizefighter is currently out of action due to a neck injury and is expected to miss WrestleMania 42.
