Aleister Black has seemingly aligned with his real-life wife, Zelina Vega, on WWE SmackDown, who helped him defeat Damian Priest in the main event on Friday afternoon (October 10). Fans have speculated that this could lead to two major rivalries, including the reformation of The Terror Twins or even another CM Punk and AJ Lee tag team bout.
Black and Priest have been embroiled in a heated rivalry for several weeks that came to a head on SmackDown in Perth, Australia. They squared off in a last man standing match, and it was thanks to Zelina's interference that her husband prevailed.
The former Women's United States Champion distracted Priest, which allowed her spouse to use a fireball and eventually reign victorious. They celebrated together to indicate they will now be an on-screen couple moving forward.
It was quite an ending to a much improved SmackDown that definitely had hints of a new creative influence amid recent reports of changes in the writer's room. The decision to partner Zelina with Black gives both stars a new story to work with and to bring their real-life chemistry on screen.
We have seen WWE delve into similar relationships in recent years such as Dominik Mysterio first partnering with Rhea Ripley before betraying his 'Mami' for Liv Morgan. Most recently, CM Punk brought AJ Lee back for the first time in over a decade and they defeated the team of Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch at Wrestlepalooza.
Fans are enthused about what's to come for the latest mixed duo and some have suggested they battle it out with other top mixed tag teams.
One fan wrote:
"Time for the Terror Twins to reunite."
Damian Priest could call upon Rhea Ripley and reunite The Terror Twins in his bid to get revenge on Zelina. They were extremely popular as a duo before Priest headed to SmackDown and Ripley remained on RAW.
Another fan thinks Punk is behind the new direction for Black while WWE will use Zelina playing the role of AJ in the movie 'Fighting with My Family'. They added:
"I think the set up is for a later date, not Lola. * It's Punk and AJ. * Full circle for Zelina, who played AJ. Punk wants to put over Aleister."
One reckons it's not Ripley who Priest will turn to for backup:
"Oh he got Zelina involved? Now Damian Priest finna bring Lola Vice or somebody in it to deal with her."
Another is happy WWE are showcasing real-life relationships:
"Nice to see wrestling couples being part of wrestling shows too. Seth and Becky, Punk & Aj and now Black and Zelina."
Zelina and Black are believed to have started dating around 2017 and married in November 2018. They have yet to be used as an on-screen couple as Black had spent three-and-a-half years with AEW while Zelina remained in WWE during that time.
WWE will have seen the buzz created when AJ returned and how the internet went wild over her relationship with Punk being displayed on TV. Their rivalry with Lynch and Rollins helped re-ignite the main feud between the two males that had dragged on.
Those aren't the only two couples on WWE's roster as the promotion has proven to be somewhat of a dating hotspot. The list of possible mixed tag teams who are spouses include: Bianca Belair and Montez Ford, Candice LaRae and Johnny Gargano, Priest and Lola Vice, Tiffany Stratton and Ludwig Kaiser (El Grande Americano), Jimmy Uso and Naomi, Kelani Jordon and Carmelo Hayes, and Lash Legend and Trick Williams.
That's just superstars who are contracted with WWE but there's even talent from TNA who could be included. Chelsea Green recently voiced her desire for husband Matt Cardona to join her on SmackDown.
WWE have trialled showcasing couples before with the Mixed Match Challenge which was a series that saw mixed tag teams compete in a tournament. But this never truly took off but a show isn't required if the promotion were to introduce mixed tag team titles.
There is enough depth to have the titles defended cross brand and even on TNA if necessary. This would help put eyes on both the men's and women's divisions by mixing them up and one can imagine it would also make for excellent behind-the-scenes footage for the Unreal Netflix series.
