Could We Really Be Getting One Final Edge vs. John Cena Match?
Adam Copeland and Christian Cage in AEW

Adam Copeland, still better known to WWE fans as Edge, threw a curveball our way on Wednesday night by telling his tag partner and best friend Christian Cage that, after FTR's attack on Beth Phoenix, he can't be there anymore and needs to take care of his family. It all appears to be part of an ongoing angle between Copeland, Cage, and FTR, but fans have got their hopes up that Copeland is on his way to WWE.

Fans Hope Adam Copeland Is Returning To WWE For A Match Against John Cena

Despite the attack on Phoenix, Copeland's declaration that he's leaving does appear to have come somewhat out of left field. He has only just reunited with Christian, and, until this week, it felt like we were still early on in what will likely be one final run for a team that will go down as one of the best of all time. Now, seemingly on a whim, Copeland is leaving for an undetermined amount of time.

Not only that, but Copeland's sudden departure also just happens to coincide with Cena seemingly taking back control os his retirement tour. If there were plans to have him face Brock Lesnar in a rematch, those plans have been scrapped. Cena's next match will now be against AJ Styles at Crown Jewel, a match he claims is happening because the fans demanded it.

Copeland Is One Of Cena's Greatest Rivals

Another wrestler fans were hoping Cena might face on his retirement tour is, you guessed it, Copeland. Copeland and Cena wrestled each other countless times, with the former in the running to be considered one of Cena's greatest rivals. With Copeland signed to an AEW contract, that seemed impossible. Now, the sudden twist in his story with Christian, combined with WWE seemingly finally ready to give Cena fans what they want with very few dates left on his retirement tour, fans are starting to hope there might be a chance.

There had been chatter suggesting Copeland's AEW contract ends in October, freeing him up for a Cena match. It's still unclear if that's accurate, though, with other rumors claiming Copeland is tied to AEW until at least the middle of next year. It seems that if this match is going to happen, it will have to happen while Copeland is still contracted to AEW.

That makes this dream match incredibly unlikely, but not impossible. While it's a very different situation, and a lot has changed since it happened, Chris Jericho was allowed to appear on Stone Cold's Broken Skull podcast on the WWE Network even though he was signed to AEW. To go back even further, to a time before AEW even existed, WWE and TNA once did a trade, the former letting the latter have Christian for the night, while TNA's Ric Flair was allowed to appear at the WWE Hall of Fame. If Copeland really is coming back to WWE to face Cena, it will likely mean WWE has to do something big for AEW in return.
