Drew McIntyre Invented His Finisher To Avoid Wardrobe Malfunctions

Drew McIntyre's Claymore is a simple yet unique and incredibly effective finisher. The Scottish Psychopath kicks his opponents in the face as hard as he can, his entire body leaving the floor so there's as much force and weight behind the move as possible. Turns out all McIntyre really wanted to do was a Big Boot, but he was afraid the move would rip his pants.

Drew McIntyre Created The Claymore To Avoid Ripping His Pants

The former WWE Champion was asked about the origins of the Claymore during an appearance on ESPN, at which point he admitted he invented the move accidentally. "I used to wear these tight leather pants when I was a kid, and I ran to kick somebody in the face, just a regular Big Boot," McIntyre explained.

"I realized the pants were going to split. I kicked up my other leg, hit my opponent on the face. The reason that I did it is because my crotch was going to burst open in those tight leather pants." Seemingly during his first run in WWE, there's a match where McIntyre, potentially while teaming with 3MB, went to hit someone with a Big Boot only to panic, lift his other leg, and inadvertently use the then-unnamed Claymore for the first time.

That presumably led to a conversation backstage where McIntyre was asked what that move was, and he either made something up on the spot, or he admitted why he did it, but someone noted he should make it a part of his move set. More than a decade later, not only is McIntyre still using it, but it's one of the most impact finishing moves in WWE.

McIntyre added that a wardrobe malfunction of that description would be particularly embarrassing for him due to a Scotsman's penchant to leave the house without wearing any underwear.

The Claymore Is One Of The Most Impactful Finishers In WWE Today

It's funny to think of McIntyre using the Claymore before he left WWE. It's such a big move that has been used to create huge moments - the Claymore that eliminated Brock Lesnar from a Royal Rumble match is one that immediately springs to mind. It's very much a move that I associate with the far more successful version of McIntyre who's in WWE today.

While I'm sure some finishing moves are intentionally created and wrestlers spend eons discussing and perfecting them, it seems quite a few of them happen by accident. The Claymore joins The People's Elbow in that club . D'Lo Brown recently explained how The Rock accidentally created the move during an untelevised live event after running the wrong way before hitting a standard elbow drop.
