Diamond Dallas Page spoke during a recent interview about some advice he gave Cody Rhodes as Rhodes was set to become the WWE Champion, with the win potentially being pulled out from under him. It was a shock to many fans that Cody didn't win his match at WrestleMania 39, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
DDP says Cody Rhodes was told for a long time that he was going to win at WrestleMania 39“I said to him is it that bad if you don’t win? He goes I knew you were going to say that. I said you know man you don’t win they want it more.â€(@ChrisVanVliet interview) pic.twitter.com/QR0OBZyTrs— Vick (@Vick_8122) December 23, 2025
DDP noted that Cody Rhodes was told for months that he was going to win at WrestleMania 39, before plans changed. Most fans believed Cody was going to win that match as the creative buildup was that The American Nightmare would "finish his story." Ultimately, As Rhodes was preparing for a third Cross Rhodes, Paul Heyman distracted the referee, allowing Solo Sikoa to hit Samoan Spike on Rhodes. Roman Reigns then hit Rhodes with a spear to retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
That was not how things were likely originally supposed to go down.
DDP explained the conversation he had with Rhodes leading into that match and when it appeared the promise he would win was being taken away.
"I look at him losing that first time, I'll never forget that conversation that we had because he was told he was going over that first time, for a long time. Then things started to change, and they do. They just change. I would never believe something as big as that was going to happen until I was on my way to the ring and there was no way they could change it. "But I said to him, I said, ‘Really? Is it really that bad if you don’t win? Is it really?"
He said that Rhodes' response was, "I knew you were going to say that.’"
"I said, ‘You know man? You don’t win, they want it more.’ And then the following year, where are you? And he has to go through the hurdles with The Rock and all of that. "
DDP noted he talks to a lot of kids, men and women and tries to tell them, "Something that looks like the worst thing that happens to you, in my life, in my vision, the video game I'm playing, it has always been the best thing that’s ever happened to me."
