The July 7th edition of Monday Night Raw in Providence saw a different version of Goldberg. The former WWE Universal Champion pulled up to the arena in a red muscle car to a thunderous ovation from the fans. The Hall of Famer interrupted Gunther, who was trash-talking on ‘Da Man’ for his cold stance on the verbal abuse that ‘The Ring General’ inflicted on him of late.
Goldberg stormed into the arena with vengeance on his mind and stood face-to-face with his soon-to-be retirement match opponent. They traded some verbal blows where Goldberg quipped that Gunther had been talking way too much sh*t in recent weeks. He even screamed at the Austrian to take a swing at him. Gunther tried doing so but got clocked with a right-hand jab in return and fell to the ground.
Goldberg even had his nemesis lined up for a spear, but the latter escaped by the skin of his teeth. And just like that, the 58-year-old stood tall over one of the most tenacious wrestlers on the current WWE roster. It was quite a statement from the Tulsa native who will wrestle for the last time this weekend in Atlanta at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Not only does he have an opportunity to school Gunther over their heated confrontation from last year’s Bad Blood PLE, but Goldberg could also shock the world should he dethrone the Vienna-born wrestler for the world title.
The erstwhile defensive tackle for the Falcons has been underwhelming as an in-ring performer over the years. Gunther has already made a mockery out of Goldberg’s incompetency to wrestle straight for more than three minutes.
Gunther indeed looked like he came out of this week’s Raw a bit on the back foot. He couldn’t retort the damage done to his jaw by Goldberg. For weeks, ‘The Ring General’ talked down on the former Universal Champion by reminding him that it’s not the 1990s anymore. What he meant to say was that the times have changed and the Austrian is the best pro wrestler WWE has to offer right now.
The 37-year-old did acknowledge his rival’s gargantuan stature from his heyday. However, that doesn’t mean he’s harbored any admiration for ‘The Icon’. In fact, during one of his recent promos, the ex-NXT UK Champion affirmed that it’s his responsibility to bury the legacy and the myth of Bill Goldberg come Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Gunther’s sharp-witted humor was on display last week when he trolled Goldberg’s three-minute-long video package highlighting his career accolades. WCW legend Tommy Dreamer took note of it and described how the erstwhile Walter is unlike most of the other heels. Dreamer’s fellow host Jonathan Coachman couldn’t help but agree. However, a tragic incident has hit the Hall of Famer ahead of his swansong.
Goldberg may have turned up to Raw in a bad mood, but he would have been grieving from the inside. It’s because his father-in-law passed away a few days ago at 88 years of age. His wife, Wanda, posted the heartbreaking news on Instagram with a number of pictures of her dad.
One could deduce from it that both Goldberg and his son Gage were close to the deceased soul. If only he could’ve stayed a bit longer, he would’ve gotten the chance to see his son-in-law compete in his last-ever WWE match. But amid an irreparable personal loss, Goldberg needs to focus on the task at hand.
The wrestler having a Jewish ancestry has toiled hard to get to a point where he’s finally ending his wrestling career on his terms. Even though the fans aren’t hopeful of a brilliant in-ring display from ‘Da Man’, this verdict could very well work in his favor.
