Considering his prominent standing in WWE right now, you'd expect Gunther to have a big match lined up at WrestleMania 42. However, as the card for WWE's biggest show of the year begins to take shape, not only does The Ring General still not have a match lined up, but he may end up missing WrestleMania entirely.
According to BodySlam (via WrestleOps), WWE planned on having Gunther face off against Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania. You might have noticed that Mysterio has been missing from WWE since a brief cameo in this year's men's Royal Rumble match. That's because the legendary luchador suffered a rib injury right before that match. A rib injury that might mean he doesn't wrestle again until after WrestleMania.
According to the latest reports, Mysterio's injury leaves Gunther without a WrestleMania opponent, unless Mysterio can recover from his injury and return in time for WWE's next PLE. You might say something to the tune of, "What's the big deal? Just have him face somebody else," but it's likely not that simple.
Gunther is a big deal. WWE won't want him in a meaningless match at WrestleMania. With all of its other biggest stars now spoken for when it comes to WrestleMania matches, there aren't many, if any, options left for Gunther at 'Mania. If Mysterio isn't available, then WWE might simply prefer not to have Gunther face anyone rather than putting him in a match just for the sake of it.
It also sounds like a firm line hasn't yet been drawn under a potential Mysterio match. Even if WWE does have a plan B for Gunther at WrestleMania, it won't want to pull the rip cord on that and give up on a Mysterio match until it absolutely has to. Especially with the assumed meaning behind someone with Gunther's current track record setting his sights on Mysterio.
Thanks to his recent in-ring escapades, Gunther has earned himself the Career Killer moniker. He sent Goldberg off into the sunset, defeated John Cena in his final match, and forced AJ Styles into retirement. You have to assume that the building blocks on which a Mysterio feud was going to be built would revolve around Gunther adding the former World Champion to his list of retirees. If that was the case, I'm now worried Mysterio will opt against having a retirement match and just quietly call it quits due to his injury.
