Gunther Reflects on Goldberg's Retirement Match
via WWE

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Gunther has no regrets about his match against WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg. Before he faces CM Punk this weekend at SummerSlam with the title on the line, the Ring General took some time to talk about his match against Goldberg. The match took place at Saturday Night Main Event in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 12.

Gunther Has No Complaints About the Goldberg Match

In an interview with Radio Times, Gunther spoke about wrestling Goldberg, which ended up being Goldberg’s retirement match. The match ended with Gunther retaining the WWE World Heavyweight title. In the end, he feels that both of the stars “exceeded expectations.”

“I was very happy with how everything went [against Goldberg] and I feel like we exceeded expectations for the match. For me, it was important to not go out there and have the typical three or four minutes of action and that’s it. I wanted time to tell a story and take the audience on a ride and make them feel bad for him a little bit before it all ends. I think we succeeded with that. He can be very happy with the match and the connection that he had with the audience because that felt very special.”

Goldberg Doesn’t Seem To Totally Agree

While Gunther was happy with how that match turned out, as reported before, Goldberg wasn’t as thrilled with how it turned out. He was disappointed in a lot of things, including the lack of buildup between the two, not taking place during a Premium Live Event, feeling that all the hard work he was putting in wasn't reciprocated, and one of the biggest issues was, of course, his retirement speech being cut short after 30 seconds on NBC.

Though he did praise working with Gunther and called it a “great opportunity.” Their feud started in October 2024 at Bad Blood, when Gunther harassed Goldberg and his family while they were seated ringside. It would take until the July 7, 2025, edition of Monday Night RAW before Goldberg returned to WWE and got another chance to confront the Ring General. The rest is now just history unless Goldberg decides one day to return to the ring.
