John Cena is the talk of the town right now. He’s retiring in just a few weeks, but fans still don’t know who his last opponent will be. But it hasn’t stopped the WWE Universe from speculating about this match. Stars like CM Punk or Randy Orton were believed to be potential retirement match opponents for The Cenation Leader. But now that these wrestlers have already worked with Cena during this Retirement Tour, it’s doubtful WWE will book them again as Cena’s final opponent.

A new rumor now suggests that Gunther could be the one to retire John Cena in December. He’s been one of the speculated names to end Cena’s career for a while now, and considering how WWE has booked him on the main roster so far, he might be the perfect candidate to retire Cena after all.

Gunther Has Been One Of The Most Dominating Wrestlers In WWE For Years Now

Gunther started his 2025 off strong as the World Heavyweight Champion. He was booked in a WrestleMania rivalry with Jey Uso, who had won this year’s Men’s Royal Rumble. A lot of fans weren’t expecting Uso to win this match, but WWE surprised them when Gunther tapped out at the Show of Shows.

Both wrestlers continued their feud post-WrestleMania, and a rematch was set up for the World Heavyweight Championship on June 9 at Monday Night Raw. Gunther recaptured the title belt here and became the World Champion.

The spotlight was once again on him, and reportedly, Triple H made this call because of Goldberg. The WCW legend returned to the ring after over 3 years to challenge Gunther for the title at SNME. WWE sowed the seeds of their feud months in advance. Both wrestlers threw shades at each other, with Gunther even insulting Goldberg’s son at Bad Blood 2024. So this matchup was completely random from a storyline perspective.

They faced each other in Goldberg’s hometown of Atlanta, where Gunther prevailed and ended the former’s career. He defended his title one more time at SummerSlam but couldn’t win against CM Punk. Since then, Gunther has been missing in action, and what better way for him to return than to go up against The Cenation Leader? Here’s why this makes sense.

Gunther Vs John Cena Would Be A Dream Match For Many Fans

In July, Gunther talked about John Cena’s legacy and also hinted at a potential showdown between the two later down the road. Gunther said, “Maybe there’s a chance to get in there with him before he hangs it up.”

At that time, WWE couldn’t make it work because both Cena and Gunther were feuding with different opponents. But with Cena’s retirement date coming closer and Gunther also preparing for his WWE return, there’s finally a chance to make this match happen.

Dave Meltzer said that WWE will be hosting a tournament to decide Cena’s final opponent. Gunther can participate in said tournament and win it all. Here’s what the report said:

“Two sources have confirmed that the latest plan is for a tournament to be announced, possibly on the air by Paul Levesque, with top wrestlers vying to be Cena’s last opponent. But multiple have confirmed however it reaches the conclusion that Gunther was the person chosen for the match.” (H/T Sports Illustrated)

It should be an easy victory for Gunther, considering he’s had experience winning a tournament before in WWE. Also, John Cena and Gunther have never shared the ring before. So this will also be a dream match for many fans. It wouldn’t even be surprising if Cena finally taps out during his match. That’s a sure-fire way to establish Gunther as the most overpowered wrestler on the roster. Are you excited to see Gunther vs John Cena?
