The Death Riders storyline has dominated the AEW main event scene since back at the All Out 2024 PPV when Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and PAC turned heel and attacked Bryan Danielson, also bringing Wheeler Yuta and Marina Shafir into their ranks eventually. Moxley went on to win the AEW World Title, ending Danielson’s full-time career, before then engaging in a hostile takeover of the company and wreaking havoc for many months on end, all the while keeping the AEW World Title locked in a briefcase and hidden away from the audience.
Fans are desperately hoping for a conclusion to this now underwhelming storyline at some time very soon, and here are potential avenues that AEW may end up going down to finally bring an end to an angle that has ruined the main event picture.
When the Death Riders storyline began, Darby Allin was one of the figureheads in standing up to the group. Moxley originally won Allin’s title shot for WrestleDream 2024, where he went on to defeat Bryan Danielson for the AEW World Championship. This all began with Allin being victim of manipulation and cheating from Moxley, allowing the group to rise up in AEW and take over the main event scene. Allin has been chopped down, beaten, and bruised, making it all seem like a high possibility that he undergoes an underdog journey to seek revenge and take down Jon Moxley.
The only thing getting in the way of this expected development is the fact that Darby Allin’s trip to climb Mount Everest is taking place this year instead of last, meaning that if AEW does in fact want Allin to dethrone Moxley, they will have to wait. Tony Khan may be willing to hold off in order to give Allin his crowning moment, becoming essentially a version of Sting who sought to take down the nWo in WCW.
Many great factions in pro wrestling have imploded from within - Evolution, The Shield, nWo, and more, and even many in AEW have broken apart from inside such as The Inner Circle. This could eventually be how the Death Riders are torn apart. Either PAC or Claudio Castagnoli could grow jealous, or else Wheeler Yuta could finally see sense once again and decide to break free, sick of some of the mistreatment he has felt.
There is a chance that the group eventually brings in a new member who could then take it down too, whether as a plan or due to that aforementioned jealousy. This doesn’t seem like the likeliest of directions, but it can never be counted out when it comes to stables and teams. Over the years, jealousy and frustrations with the leader of a faction has led to things unravelling, and Moxley could be a victim of betrayal from his own soldiers in the long run. PAC or Castagnoli could certainly get a big main event rub or push on the back of it, and Yuta could finally try and climb to that next level as a performer.
Several wrestlers have stepped up to the Death Riders, whether that be to try and take them down or else win the AEW World Championship. Thus far, the likes of Orange Cassidy, Private Party, Jay White, and Adam Page have been among those who have come up short against Jon Moxley. Cope returned to AEW at Worlds End 2024, stepping up as the next man to take on the Death Riders.
Many assumed that he would be added to the list of those beaten by Moxley, but in actual fact he’s been presented stronger than anyone when it comes to taking on the group. Even after a defeat at Grand Slam: Australia, Cope has worked hard on taking out each member of the Death Riders, all leading up to a title match against Moxley at Revolution 2024. Given Cope’s age, him taking down the group feels counterproductive and a bad reflection on the company, but with the general consensus being that fans want this angle to end, AEW may very well end up pulling the trigger and having Rated-FTR be the group to end them for good.
Ending the Death Riders and bringing about change in AEW may end up being a group effort. At the start, the likes of Orange Cassidy, Darby Allin, Hook, Daniel Garcia and more looked set to rally together and rid AEW of the group, but they all ventured apart and the whole “AEW vs. Death Riders” angle went in a whole different direction.
This could change heading into the next few months, and it may finally be time for all the big stars in AEW to come together and outnumber the heels. The likes of The Elite, Swerve Strickland, Darby Allin, and more are all potential candidates to eventually join forces for the greater good. Even though it feels like too little too late on this point, Tony Khan may decide that this is the ultimate direction.
