At AEW All In 2024, Mariah May defeated her former mentor Toni Storm, becoming the new AEW Women’s World Champion in front of her own London crowd. This was the first time that she won a title in the company after debuting for them in late 2023.
With this championship win, Mariah won the first major title of her career, and has been set up to become a superstar in wrestling. At 26 years old, she is the youngest world champion in AEW history, and has gotten a huge kickstart to her career.
Mariah May joined AEW after making a name for herself in Stardom, and she immediately became the sidekick for Women’s Champion Toni Storm, accompanying her to the ring for her matches. Slowly, Storm began noticing her more and would start repaying the favor by bringing Mariah out for her matches as well. Eventually, the two started teaming together and continued to get closer as tag team partners and friends.
They became so close that in the leadup to AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2024, May became divided between her new mentor and her original mentor, Mina Shirakawa, as the two were set to face off at the PPV. At the event, Mariah decided to remain neutral, and embraced both Shirakawa and Storm at the end of the match. Due to her success in recent months, May earned a spot in the women’s 2024 Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.
In the tournament, May faced some of the top competition in the division as she had to wrestle Saraya, Hikaru Shida, and Willow Nightingale. Despite not having nearly the wrestling experience that her opponents did, she was able to overcome the odds and earn an AEW Women’s World Championship shot in her hometown of London at All In 2024.
After defeating Willow in the finals on an episode of AEW Dynamite, Mariah went to the stage ramp to celebrate with Toni Storm who was waiting to congratulate her. However, to the shock of everyone, Mariah turned on Storm after the match ended and brutally attacked her in front of the crowd. The show ended with Toni Storm led blooded on the ramp, as May held the AEW Women’s World in front of her.
After Mariah May turned on ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm, she let the AEW crowd know that there was never a real relationship between them. She was only using Toni to get to the top and now that she got her title opportunity, she no longer needed to act as her sidekick.
At AEW All In 2024, the two faced off in the second PPV match of the night in front of Mariah’s home fans. Despite that, the crowd borderline booed Mariah out of the building due to her recent actions, showing that even though she is wrestling in front of her home she’s such a good heel that even they can’t cheer for her. Mariah was able to defeat Toni Storm after having one of the best matches of the night, becoming the new AEW Women’s World Champion.
With this huge world title win, Mariah May has already become one of the biggest women’s wrestlers in the world very early into her professional career. AEW is the second biggest wrestling brand in the world, and despite name value in TBS Champion Mercedes Mone, Mariah currently holds the most important women’s championship in the company.
She has shown that she can work as a believable heel and babyface, and can get the crowd to react however she wants them to. She is one of the best in-ring women’s workers in the world and is also an excellent mic worker who has shown to have charisma. With the talent she already possesses and the time she still has left in her career, it’s certain that Mariah May will go down as an all time great in women’s wrestling.
