How WWE Should Book a Rey Mysterio Farewell Tour

Rey Mysterio has been a cornerstone of WWE, enchanting fans as the iconic masked luchador. His wrestling journey began on May 29, 1992, in a tag team match for WWA, partnering with Remington against Chamaco Rebelde and Estampa Brava in a no-contest bout. Since then, he has competed across various promotions, with two notable WWE stints: from 2002 to 2014 and from 2018 to the present.

At 50, Mysterio is currently sidelined by an injury. If he chooses to retire, following John Cena’s ongoing farewell tour or AJ Styles’ planned 2026 exit, WWE could craft a spectacular send-off through these compelling storylines.

Dominik Mysterio Storyline

Dominik Mysterio, once his father’s tag team partner alongside Edge, betrayed them at Clash at the Castle 2022. This sparked a heated father-son rivalry, culminating in Rey’s victory over Dominik at WrestleMania 39. A new angle could see Dominik, now the Intercontinental Champion and AAA Mega Champion, challenge Rey again, this time with his father’s career at stake.

While Dominik’s momentum makes a loss unlikely, the drama of a son forcing his father’s retirement would captivate audiences, blending personal stakes with in-ring intensity to honor Rey’s legacy. He was expected to return around August, but his plans have been derailed.

Retirement Tour to Elevate Rising Stars

John Cena is nearing the end of his retirement tour, with four appearances left, concluding at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, 2025. AJ Styles has also hinted at retiring in 2026. Rey Mysterio could embark on a similar tour, facing up-and-coming wrestlers to give them a spotlight. Members of the Latino World Order (LWO) could shine, while heels would vie to be his final opponent.

A dream match against Penta or Rey Fenix would showcase Rey’s high-flying prowess. The challenge lies in choosing among the three wrestlers currently portraying El Grande Americano for his last match, adding intrigue to the tour’s climax.

The Mysterios Spark Rey’s Retirement

Dominik Mysterio has excelled on WWE’s main roster, while his sister, Aliyah Mysterio, is reportedly training to wrestle. A storyline could emerge where Dominik resents Aliyah’s presence in WWE, especially if she interferes with his on-screen romances, citing real-life implications. Rey, siding with Aliyah, might face Dominik’s ultimatum: if Aliyah loses a match against him,

Rey must retire. Though unorthodox, Rey could accept resolving family discord. In the match, Rey would coach Aliyah, but Dominik, channeling Eddie Guerrero’s cunning, might cheat to win, forcing his father’s retirement. With his children in the ring and family at ringside, this emotional spectacle would be a fitting curtain call for Rey’s illustrious career.

It would be interesting to see how WWE chooses to conclude the legendary career of Rey Mysterio, the beloved Luchador who has already secured his place in the WWE Hall of Fame. Rey’s contributions have helped many masked superstars, and it would be interesting to see if he chooses to work in a backstage role or as a trainer at the Performance Center to develop new talent.
