John Cena has answered fans' queries over possibly having one more match at WrestleMania after Cody Rhodes "reignited a fire inside of him" at SummerSlam.
John Cena will have four months left competing as a WWE superstar after Clash in Paris (August 31) when he squares off against Logan Paul. This will be one of his final PLE matches with his Farewell Tour set to finish at Saturday Night's Main Event on December 13.
The 48-year-old is calling time on his illustrious career, having become a record-breaking 17-time world champion at WrestleMania 41. He defeated Rhodes in the main event, although their match was criticised for a weak finish after rapper Travis Scott interfered.
Cena seemingly had a point to prove at SummerSlam when he put the WWE Championship on the line against Rhodes. He lost on the night, but the pair produced arguably his best match since becoming a part-timer and one of his all-time classics at MetLife Stadium.
The Greatest of All-Time spoke highly of that match by explaining how it impacted him in his final year competing in the ring:
"Cody Rhodes brought out the best of me at SummerSlam. He reignited a fire in me."
This has sparked speculation that Cena may perform a U-turn and extend his Farewell Tour, allowing him to continue to roll back the years. Some feel he deserves a more grandiose event like WrestleMania to hang up his sneaks.
Cena gave a firm answer to the possibility of seeing him compete one last time on the grandest stage of them all. He told fans during a Q&A with WIRED:
"What I do know is there are no more WrestleMania matches for this guy. My last one was a few weeks ago."
Cena is likely to make four more PLE appearances before retiring from in-ring competition in December. The returning Brock Lesnar looks set to be his next opponent after Paul, when WWE revives the old ECW PPV 'Wrestlepalooza' on September 20 on ESPN to go up against AEW's All Out.
Fans may then expect to see him appear at Crown Jewel in Perth, Australia, on October 11, before possibly his final PLE match at Survivor Series on November 29. It seems clear that he has no interest in waiting to see out his career back at Allegiant Stadium for WrestleMania 42 in April 2026.
While John Cena may be done competing at WrestleMania, he can still fulfil many fans' dream matches against some of the current generation. The first half of his Farewell Tour was spent as a heel, and he battled former foes, Randy Orton, CM Punk and R-Truth.
Cena turned babyface the night before SummerSlam and is now set to face younger talent, such as Paul, at Clash in Paris. With his final appearance expected to be at Saturday Nigh t's Main Event, many are pondering who will be his final opponent.
The future WWE Hall of Famer is reportedly scheduled to face Gunther in his final match before bidding farewell to the pro wrestling business, per WKRD. The Ring General is one of the company's top heels and ended WCW icon Goldberg's career at Saturday Night's Main Event in July.
Cena's father had even vouched for Gunther to face his son in the main event of WrestleMania before his heel turn at Elimination Chamber. The Austrian heavyweight is a former two-time World Heavyweight Champion who has earned plaudits for his old-school in-ring style.
