John Cena's incredible WWE career comes to an end this Saturday against The Ring General, Gunther. Well, the in-ring part of his career comes to an end. Even though Cena will never wrestle again after this weekend, the Never Seen 17 has already figured out what he plans to do next WWE-wise, and he isn't going anywhere.
Okay, that's not technically true. We didn't see much of Cena in WWE prior to his 2025 retirement tour since he's a very busy Hollywood star now. We'll return to that norm after December 13, but that doesn't mean Cena will suddenly stop waving the WWE flag. He will likely be doing it more than ever, as he confirmed today that he has signed a five-year deal with WWE to be an ambassador.
"I will be an ambassador to WWE. I’m already signed on for another five years. Please, as long as you can do it. I would like to be in this family as an employee, as a contributing part for as long as I can," Cena told Tom Rinaldi in an interview shared on WWE's YouTube channel.
As for what being an ambassador for WWE means, even Cena doesn't know for sure. He envisions it being about getting more people to watch the product and mentoring upcoming Superstars. "Maybe ambassadorship comes with letting more people know to watch this, which was my goal in the first place, and maybe mentorship to talent I wouldn’t spend time with, where I can sit and be like, ‘Who are you really? How can I get the rapping moment on the bus? I want that guy or girl on TV.’ I’m looking forward to that stuff."
Cena's rapping on the bus moment refers to a time he was rapping on a WWE tour bus, Stephanie McMahon heard him, and the opportunity that arose from that led to the birth of his Dr. of Thuganomics character.
Even though Cena will retire this weekend, no one really believed he would never show up in WWE again. That was never implied. He simply won't wrestle again, in WWE or anywhere, but appearances on special shows and elsewhere will continue. He won't look the same as he has for his WWE appearances for the past 23 years, though.
No, when Cena retires this weekend, the jeans and shorts look retires along with him. Cena confirmed that he'll be wearing a suit whenever we see him in WWE after Saturday. Working as an ambassador and dressed like an ambassador, and even though it's a five-year deal, Cena will likely be tied to WWE in this way for life.
