Kevin Owens had a very difficult year last year, as he suffered a severe neck injury, which has rendered him out of action. Early in 2025, the Canadian veteran was in one of the best stretches of his career with a WWE contract renewed until 2030, which Triple H and the management of the company approved.
Owens was coming out of significant feuds with Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn by this point, and was on the verge of a high-profile WrestleMania 41 match with Randy Orton in Las Vegas.
Those plans, however, came to a sudden end with Owens having to drop out of the event because of a severe neck condition that became worse as time went by. He had felt some discomfort earlier in the year, but the severity of the injury was not immediately diagnosed.
Kevin Owens says he wants to help the next generation, has been losing his mind not getting to be around wrestling:

“I’ve been wrestling for 25 years. Ultimately, for me, I just want to help the next generation, and also, I don’t really know what I’d do with myself if I didn’t.… pic.twitter.com/KdHq578ZxA
In the summer of 2025, Owens underwent neck surgery. He has been kept on the sidelines since, and there are no definite dates for his return. These sorts of injuries need care and patience to heal properly. He must avoid rushing a comeback, as it could risk long-term damage.
Owens continues to focus on rehabilitation rather than competition. Despite being unable to wrestle, he has stayed closely connected to WWE through training routines and involvement in company-related projects, remaining visible within the wrestling environment even while recovering.
Owens was vocal about how challenging it has been to remain out of the ring. He described that wrestling is a part of his identity, and being out of the industry has been a bit of a challenge after 25 years of involvement in the industry. Owens expressed that he has been involved in the business since his teenage years and does not know how he would adjust to life without it.
He finds it very difficult to be away from WWE due to his neck surgery. He is eager to return to the environment he loves and continue contributing in any way possible. His words show the emotional toll of being sidelined and underscore how important professional wrestling still is to him despite his current setback.
Owens is currently unfit to return and will have more scrutiny in the summer, which may give us a clearer insight as to his future in the ring in the long term. That evaluation will be crucial in determining whether he can safely return to wrestling or if more recovery time will be necessary.
Owens is still under contract and engaged with WWE in a non-wrestling role; it is unclear how he will fare in the future. Both fans and insiders are optimistic that positive news is to be given, but due to the seriousness of his injury, there can be no guarantee.
For now, Kevin Owens continues to focus on recovery, staying connected to the industry that has defined his life while waiting for the opportunity to return to the ring he has called home for more than two decades.
