In 2022, a routine move gone wrong resulted in Big E breaking his neck. The New Day star hasn't been able to wrestle since, and although he has recovered enough to continue living a normal life, the former WWE Champion has now confirmed that he will never wrestle again.
Speaking to Compas On The Beat, Big E categorically confirmed that, as of this moment, he has retired from professional wrestling. "I’m content. And you know in wrestling they always say ‘never say never,’ but right now I’m retired and that for me is it. So I’m focused on other things right now," were E's exact words.
This isn't the first time Big E has suggested he probably isn't going to wrestle again. As recently as October, the multi-time Tag Team Champion suggested it's unlikely that he will ever be in a position again where he can step back between the ropes for a match. However, today's comments are the most concrete confirmation we've heard from him yet as we approach the fourth anniversary of the accident that ended his career.
The accident happened during the March 11, 2022, episode of SmackDown. Ridge Holland performed a belly-to-belly suplex on E at rignside, but it didn't go to plan. Big E landed on his head instead of his back, fracturing his C1 and C6 vertebrae. An injury that could have had far more serious consequences, but thankfully wound up being one that didn't require surgery.
Big E can still walk and do just about everything he did before the injury. It seems the only thing he hasn't been cleared to do is return to the ring, and now we have confirmation that's almost certainly never going to happen. As soon as E was ready to return to work, he began working as a presenter for WWE, frequently making on-screen appearances as part of PLE panels.
I'm sure Big E has a job for life in WWE if he wants it, whether he is ever cleared to wrestle again or not, and he appears to be at peace with that. He's entertaining and charismatic, even without having to step between the ropes, hence why WWE wanted to get him back on screen and would like to keep him around.
As E himself says, you can never say never. As the likes of Bryan Danielson, Saraya, and Adam Copeland have proved, even when you're told by medical professionals that you can never wrestle again, there's always a chance. E might be retired now, but who knows what the future might hold.
