  • 1) Matt Hardy: WWE prefers TNA as a partner, not an immediate acquisition.
  • 2) WWE and TNA cooperation has produced historic moments and currently benefits both companies.
  • 3) An acquisition remains possible long-term, but none is expected in the immediate future.

With WWE’s recent acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA still fresh, many fans have been wondering if TNA Wrestling could be next on the company’s shopping list. On the latest episode of his Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Matt Hardy gave his perspective on the possibility of WWE outright buying TNA.

Hardy Believes WWE Wants TNA As A Partner

Hardy understands the curiosity and speculation, but he noted that he doesn’t see WWE buying TNA anytime soon. Noting that he think WWE prefers to have TNA as a partner, a purchase could happen down the road, but things are working out well for both sides as is. “Will they buy them in the future? That’s always a possibility. WWE, buying anything is always a possibility, but as of right now, I don’t see it. I don’t see it happening anytime in the immediate future.”

WWE currently has a working relationship with TNA that has already produced some historic moments.

Hardy is under the impression WWE’s current plan is more about cooperation than acquisition. “I feel like right now, WWE wants TNA to be a partner, someone that’s on its own, that is doing its own business in some capacity that they can use as a partner,” he said.

WWE Wants Another Competitor For AEW

Hardy suggested WWE may actually want to help strengthen TNA as a way to provide alternative competition to AEW, while still maintaining control of the partnership. It's a sound strategy that tags two strong promotions against one. WWE continues to maintain that they aren't worried about what AEW does. Their decisions on PLE dates and stacking cards against AEW shows otherwise.

WWE has a lot of say in how TNA operates, which takes away TNA as a competitor and makes them more an ally against WWE's closest wrestling competitor. “I’m just saying this hypothetically. I’m just saying as something that is right underneath WWE, there’s TNA, and they’re doing this. ‘We want to build these people. So it’s another organization that we are friends with, that we have a say with, that we can work together, we can have a partnership, and they can help us remain as the top number one promotion in the world.’

Whether this working relationship eventually evolves into a full WWE acquisition remains to be seen, but Hardy’s comments suggest fans shouldn’t expect it to happen anytime soon.
