At AEW WrestleDream, Mercedes Mone held an open challenge, answered by Mina Shirakawa. The match was for both the TBS Championship and the ROH Women’s Television Championship, although Shirakawa was only the interim champion. When the time comes, Mone will have to defend against Red Velvet to determine the lineal champion.

Mone Breaks More Records

Not only did Mone become the longest-reigning TBS Champion, but she also beat Ultimo Dragon’s record of holding the most championships simultaneously. Dragon had a total of ten championships, where Mone now holds eleven. However, Mone may be able to break her own record tomorrow if she can defeat Jody Threat for the WPW Women’s Championship. Mone could become only the second woman to hold the championship if she can win.

The Match

The match between Shirakawa and Mone was nothing short of amazing. First, Mone came out to interrupt Kris Statlander’s celebration after she defeated Toni Storm. Then, Shirakawa answered Mone’s challenge. The match went back and forth, with each woman having a strong showing. Both women had nearfalls and traded rollups.

Shirakawa targeted Mone’s knee throughout the match, which gave her an advantage. One of the most tense parts of the match happened when Shirakawa just barely caught the rope during a pin, breaking the pin and leaving Mone bewildered.

Eventually, the referee would get pushed into the corner, giving Mone a chance to rake Shirakawa’s eyes. This proved to be a big detriment, as it allowed Mone to get the pin and win. However, it’s worth noting that Mone used the ropes as leverage to win. One of Mone’s earlier pinfall attempts saw her using the ropes as leverage, but the referee caught her that time.

After the match, Kris Statlander came out and slammed Mercedes on the ground, giving her a taste of her own medicine.

The Future

This match will lead to a few things. First, it gives Mina Shirakawa another reason to challenge Mone. Since Mone cheated, Shirakawa has every right to a rematch, and still looks strong as she wasn’t beaten clean.

Secondly, it teases the next chapter of Mone and Statlander’s story. Kris Statlander has been waiting to give Mone her comeuppance after losing to her twice. Luckily for her, she’ll have this chance sooner rather than later. Mone challenged Statlander to a match at Full Gear for the AEW Women’s World Championship.
