Mercedes Mone just defended her CMLL World Women’s Championship in the main event of the 10/18 Arena Mexico show. This show was an all-female show to honor women’s wrestling month. The match itself saw her don Selena-inspired gear and retain the championship against challenger Persephone. The match was incredible, with many nearfalls. Mone also even poured a drink on Persephone’s parents before winning via submission. The show as a whole was excellent, and is a must-watch for any Women’s Wrestling or Lucha Libre fan.
After the match, Mercedes Mone issued two open challenges. First, Mone called out the CMLL roster for a challenger to her freshly retained championship. This challenge was answered by Olympia, who recently lost to Billie Starkz in the ROH Women’s Pure Tournament. Mone would accept, but the match will not take place in Arena Mexico; instead, it will take place on American soil. Further details are not yet known.
Lastly, she also issued an open challenge to “any champion in the world” for AEW WrestleDream tomorrow night. The challenger will have a shot at Mone’s TBS Championship.
Some early predictions for Mone’s challenger include Syuri or even Saya Kamitani. Some also point to Athena or Mina Shirakawa. Others have brought Hazuki into the fold; however, she has matches in CMLL all weekend that prevent her from performing at WrestleDream.
There are a few things to note before heading into WrestleDream on Saturday. Firstly, this will be the first AEW PPV with three women’s matches on the main card in three years. The last AEW PPV that had three women’s matches was Full Gear 2022. This is a big step-up for the AEW Women’s Division, and hopefully the new norm. The matches include: Toni Storm vs. Kris Statlander for the AEW Women’s World Championship, Thekla vs. Jamie Hayter, and Mercedes Mone vs. ??? for the TBS Championship.
Next, Mercedes Mone became the longest reigning TBS Champion today. She beat Jade Cargill’s record at 509 days, but she may not have what it takes to make it past day 510 tomorrow. Lastly, Mercedes Mone will have a match every day this weekend, all title matches, all in different countries. First, she defended against Persephone in Mexico Friday night, then she will defend against whoever answers the open challenge Saturday in the USA. Finally, she will challenge Jody Threat in Winnipeg on Sunday.
It couldn’t be a bigger weekend for Mone, and it will also determine whether or not she can pass Ultimo Dragon’s record.
