The passing of professional wrestling legend Hulk Hogan has led to a ton of tributes to his remarkable life from across the world. But while many are mourning the passing of Hogan, the police are currently investigating it.

Over the past 24 hours there have been reports that Hogan's death may have been a result of some medical malpractice. TMZ Sports has reported that an occupational therapist who was present at Hogan's home when he stopped breathing last month told the responding officers that a recent surgery had severed Hogan's phrenic nerve.

As described by the Cleveland Clinic and the National Institutes of Health, the phrenic nerve is connected to the spine and sends the signals from the brain to the diaphragm to have it expand and contract for the lungs to breathe. Any damage to the nerve could severely restrict a person's ability to breathe.

Speaking to TMZ Sports, Hogan's widow Sky confirmed that his phrenic nerve was indeed "compromised" as a result of a recent surgery. An autopsy was initiated by Hogan's daughter Brooke and has been completed, but the results are not yet public.

The police give their statement

Hogan's death is being investigated by the Clearwater Police Department. On Thursday they shared a statement with TMZ Sports on their investigation into Hogan's passing being ongoing.

"We have been in communication with family members -- including his son, Nick, and daughter, Brooke. The unique nature of this case has required us to interview multiple witnesses and seek medical records from a variety of providers, and our detectives continue to do that. All of this takes time."

"The Hogan family has been appreciative of our efforts and our communication with them."

Fans want justice

Whether or not Hogan truly was killed as a result of medical malpractice due to a surgery, wrestling fans are already going on social media and calling for action against the people who worked on him.

Some are calling Hogan's death "murder" while others are simply throwing increasing suspicion on the qualifications of the doctors who have worked on him:

"HulkHogan was murdered. Hack surgeon severed his phrenic nerve (the nerve that controls the diaphragm muscle). C 3,4,5 keeps the diaphragm alive.... until it doesn't.... I knew they were hiding something. Massive wrongful death lawsuit coming," one user wrote on X.

"Hulk Hogan’s doctor has a rap sheet full of MALPRACTICE, battery, and even tampering with a witness… yet he was the one to sign Hulk Hogan’s death certificate. How is that not suspicious? Hey @TMZ you should probably sniff that one out…" wrote radio host Bubba the Love Sponge.

"We were told ONE story… but I’ve heard otherwise And now they say we CAN’T SEE the body cam footage or the police report What’s really being hidden in the death of Hulk Hogan, what is it they DON'T want us to know?" Bubba the Love Sponge wrote in another post.

The impact that Hogan had on wrestling

Following Hogan's passing, WWE released a statement on July 24 and commemorated his contributions to sports entertainment.

"WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away," the company said. "One of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends, and fans."

Hogan's 2,185 days as WWE Champion are the second-most in the company's history as is his 1,474-day run as WWE Champion from 1984 to 1988.

And while he may have lost a lot of fans later in life, he has a massive following that few entertainers in the world can match. The sooner the Clearwater PD complete the investigation and share their findings, the better.
