The OKC Thunder made their call on a potential visit to Donald Trump and the White House after they won the 2024-25 NBA championship. The Thunder had a remarkable run to the championship, posting the league-best record (68-14) and losing just four games on the way to the Finals.
The Indiana Pacers took them to a seventh game in the championship series, but after Tyrese Halliburton went down with an Achilles injury, the Thunder hit the gas and secured the first title in franchise history. They had the chance to visit the White House, a tradition that resumed in 2023 with the Golden State Warriors.
Several teams made the trip to Washington D.C. in recent times, including Super Bowl LIX champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, the U.S. Men’s hockey team, MLS champions Inter Miami, and others. The Thunder won’t be joining them this time.
On Friday, Joel Lorenzi of The Athletic shared that the OKC Thunder won’t visit the White House during their road trip to Washington, D.C. They will clash with the Wizards this weekend, but the only venue they will visit will be Capital One Arena.
“We have been in touch with the White House and we are appreciative and grateful for the communication we have had, but the timing just didn’t work out,” the Thunder said in a statement.
At this time, the Thunder are still fighting for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. It doesn’t seem like the best idea to change their schedule for this meeting. The Boston Celtics will remain the last NBA champion to visit the White House.
