A new report has surfaced that, amid retirement speculation, former two-time WWE Champion AJ Styles is sticking around with WWE. According to Fightful Select, Styles has reportedly signed a one-year contract extension with WWE.
Details surrounding the exact timing of the extension, including when it was signed and when it is set to expire, remain unclear. It is also unknown whether WWE has added additional time to Styles’ contract to account for his extended injury-related absences. In other words, Styles is going to wrestle for at least one more year, but it could be longer.
At 48 years old, Styles has openly discussed his intention to retire from in-ring competition before turning 50. News of this extension aligns with previous comments. He has also expressed a desire to remain part of WWE in a different capacity once his wrestling career concludes. Where he'll fit and what role he'll have in WWE when he hangs up his boots isn't clear. However, Styles is one of the most respected in-ring performers of his generation -- a producer role makes a lot of senseStyles is currently working a program with Dominik Mysterio and is set to battle for the Intercontinental Title. Fans are pitching online for “The Phenomenal One” to get one more title run.
Just recently, Styles hit a milestone in his wrestling career: 1,400 singles matches. It's a testament to his longevity, which is nothing short of remarkable. He's wrestled in TNA, New Japan, WWE, and across the indies. He joined WWE in 2016 and has been a top performer since his debut. Among the more reliable workers, he has dealt with injuries, but he's in arguably the best shape of his career.
The type of contract he signed and the number of dates he's scheduled to work weren't revealed in the report. That said, there are plenty of dream rivalries that could still be set up for Styles before he calls it a career. Some fans are hoping to see one more bout with John Cena before Cena retires. Whether Styles gets the same kind of send-off as Cena remains to be seen.
