For the second time in a month, a well-known wrestler has been arrested on serious charges. Last week, it was Ludwig Kaiser, who found himself charged with misdemeanor battery. Now, it's a former WWE superstar who was a one-time Intercontinental Champion. On May 17, third generation star Joe Hennig, who went by Curtis Axel and Michael McGillicutty in WWE, was arrested and charged on five counts .

Curtis Axel Arrested for DWI

Per court records in Anoka County, Minnesota, the 46-year-old Joe Hennig was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated following an incident on May 17. Records show that Hennig was drunk while in a McDonald's drive-thru. He reversed his car into another vehicle and got physical with police when they arrived, who then found an open bottle of vodka in his vehicle. Hennig refused to take any tests and was arrested, which led to two days in jail before he was released on May 19. His charges include:

  • Traffic-DUI-Third-Degree Driving While Impaired-Refuse to submit to chemical test.
  • Traffic – DWI – Refuse to submit to chemical test; Breath or test refusal or failure.
  • Obstruct Legal Process-Lawful Execution Legal Process.
  • Traffic-Open bottle law-Possession-crime described.
  • Traffic-Accidents-Driver Involved Fails to Stop for Accident to Property-No injury.

Curtis Axel's WWE Career Didn't Reach Its Full Potential

Joe Hennig comes from wrestling greatness. His grandfather, Larry "The Axe" Hennig, found success in the AWA. His father, Curt Hennig, became a major WWE superstar as Mr. Perfect in the late 80s and early 90s. Sadly, Hennig died in 2003, at just the age of 44, when Joe was only 22.

Joe Hennig signed with WWE in 2007. In the early days of NXT, he was given the horrible name of Michael McGillicutty. Although part of Nexus, Hennig's career never took off. In 2013, WWE repacked Hennig as Curtis Axel, a tribute to the names of his father and grandfather. Axel was put with Paul Heyman, which should have led to great success. Axel was a one-time Intercontinental Champion, and won the Raw tag titles twice, but he never reached his full potential. Axel, despite having good wrestling talent, was seen as not having the charisma and mic skills that his father possessed. Still, Axel made it 13 years in WWE, mostly as a low-card comedic act in his later years, before being released in 2020.

Following this, WWE hired Hennig to be a producer, which lasted for three months. Since 2020, he only had one indie match. Joe Hennig is sadly the latest wrestler to suffer a tragic fall from grace. His mugshot is absolutely heartbreaking. With how his father, Curt Hennig, died due to drug abuse, let's hope that Joe gets his life turned around.
