RAW on Netflix: Roman Reigns Challenges Bronson Reed & Naomi Vacates Title Due To Pregnancy

The city of Philadelphia is on the top 10 P4P list when it comes to ‘wrestling towns,’ and the WWE plans accordingly for the ‘smart crowd.’ There are plenty of historic venues in Philly, but the Xfinity Mobile Arena was tapped to host tonight’s Monday Night RAW on Netflix. With “Clash in Paris” two weeks away, the main storyline was set as a fatal four-way consisting of CM Punk, LA Knight, and Jey Uso challenging for Seth Rollins’ heavyweight championship.

With the success of TripleMania XXXIII this weekend, WWE will look to capitalize on the AAA stars that they believe have potential crossover appeal.

ECW, ECW, ECW… Everything Copied Weekly

WWE is very aware of the history that exists in Philadelphia, and they don’t mind exploiting the fandom and delivering pops for the crowd—typically in the form of a nostalgic ECW reference or segment. Tonight, they allowed the man who has a special place in Philly wrestling’s history, Paul Heyman, to deliver the first promo in the first segment of tonight’s episode.

He put over ‘The Bron Brons’ and Seth Rollins in a similar fashion to last week, and the past several weeks in a row, spread out into months of consistent openings with The Vision put over by Heyman (especially during the “Seth is hurt” weeks). It felt too similar tonight, even in front of a terrific crowd. Heyman was terrific on the mic, and Breakker and Reed look every bit the bad a**es they’ve been booked to be, but there is a moment when consistency becomes predictable, and that is when it is time to shake things up in an effort to keep the fans invested.

They managed to do that for this crowd when after Jey Uso came out through the crowd Yeeting with kids on the mic and challenged The Vision’s authority, Paul Heyman made his ECW reference for the night and popped the crowd, but it was more than mere reference as he instigated the idea of booking Jey versus Breakker in a ‘hardcore match.’

Rollins is scheduled to defend his title against CM Punk, LA Knight, and Jey Uso in two weeks at Clash in Paris, so it would go a long way if Breakker can ‘soften up’ Jey before then, especially considering Punk and Knight seem hellbent to get in each other’s way. In fact, Punk and Knight became very combative with one another during a backstage interview with “The Megastar.”

MAIN EVENT: Bron Breakker vs. Jey Uso—No DQ Match

The chairs filled the ring fast, and even if it felt like they jumped to some spots a bit too soon, the execution from both performers was able to cement a story. Of course, Rollins eventually made his way out to deliver a pedigree to Jey before attempting to revive the ref for Breakker. That is when CM Punk’s music hit, and the fight was on at the end of the show, again.

LA Knight made his way out, too, and they were able to work together despite the bickering between the two earlier in the night. Punk was driven into Knight before refocusing his intentions on Rollins. This distraction allowed for Breakker to set the table in the ring and go after Jey for the easy pickings.

Then Roman Reigns‘ music hit, and the look on Bron’s face said it all as he anticipated Roman, who made his way through the crowd to get the drop on The Vision. He delivered a Superman punch to both Breakker and Reed before throwing in Bron for Jey to hit the Uso Splash on Breakker through the table he set up for himself.

It was not ‘The Vision stands tall’ booking that we have received for the majority of the summer, but it was the exact same booking since the last time the Rollins-led faction was challenged. With only the ‘go-home’ episode left next week, look for the tensions between Knight and Punk to escalate, but with Jey’s win tonight, he has better positioned himself as a legit challenger to Seth’s title amongst the crowded field.

Naomi… More Like A May Mommy; World Title Vacant?!

Before her planned promo segment, the Stephanie McMahon podcast received a bump with the announcement of Naomi’s pregnancy being previewed before the show dropped following RAW. She, along with her husband Jimmy Uso, admitted that they are now expecting. This, of course, prompted GM Pearce to give Naomi her entrance, and despite this being a very joyous moment, the now former world champion took this moment to double down on being a heel.

It was a terrific direction, and Naomi hinted at not giving up the title when Pearce gave her the floor. With tears in her eyes, she sold the overwhelming feelings, throwing the fans off the fact that she was still in character. The crowd’s ovation was overwhelmingly positive in support of Naomi as Pearce said that he and the entire company were thrilled about the news.

Naomi, who has had to relinquish her title in the past, told Pearce she wasn’t “giving him sh**,” before saying she hopes he ‘trips in his church shoes’ on his way to Gorilla. She said the women’s roster should be grateful to “Big Jim,” who, according to Naomi, loves to “Netflix and Chill” (a euphemism for the baby-making process), because she was getting ready to ‘dog walk’ the entire roster.

She placed the title in the center of the ring as a symbol of an official relinquishing, with the crowd going back and forth between “you deserve this” and “Jimmy Uso” chants. She promised that when she comes back, whoever has the title should “proceed with caution.” It was an amazing promo, and while it is sad to see her go at this point in her run, we here at FightsATW wish her and Jimmy the best as she reminded everyone that “the Bloodline continues.”

Dominik Mysterio: A Major League Player Swinging Big In AAA

The show recapped the weekend that was TripleMania XXXIII, specifically the biggest storyline coming out of the show, with AJ Styles showing up to cost Dom Mysterio the title win. It looks like Dom’s days in AAA are still ahead of him, with rumors swirling that he will receive a title shot and be favored to win at “ Worlds Collide” on the eve of Canelo vs. Crawford—a show that was announced just today.

The AAA product has greatly benefited from the WWE machine, with increased exposure boosting the IP of figures like Mr. Iguana and Octogan. Meanwhile, players like Dragon Lee, previously underutilized in booking, have become pivotal in AAA.

Dragon Lee & Mr. Iguana vs. The Judgement Day

JD and Finn faced off with 1/3 of their Saturday opponents as Mr. Iguana teamed with Dragon Lee to attempt to even the score with Judgement Day. Mr. Iguana has made a major impact with the North American audience, and his gimmick is so strong that it’s also helping WWE guys get over. For example, Balor’s puppet named Demonito (a play off of his Demon alter ego) debuted this Saturday to face off against Mr. Iguana’s Iguana—Demonito is for sale on WWE.com, while Mr. Iguana’s Iguana has yet to make it to the shop.

Balor picked up the pinfall victory off the back of his ‘coup-de grace’ finisher only to have Dom come out to put down Dragon Lee and Mr. Iguana, but Vikingo, who successfully defended his title for the third time in his second reign by pinning Dom, came out to takeout each member of The Judgement Day, and he did. But the momentum only lasted for a moment as the actual faction of TJD eventually took back control and finished the segment standing tall.

Other Tidbits/In-Ring Action

  • Iyo Sky defeated Raquel Rodriguez via pinfall. The former world champion picked up the win after landing her patented moonsault on Rodriguez. Roxanne Perez eventually jumped in to deliver a post-match beatdown of the victorious Sky, and it could have been bad if Rhea Ripley hadn’t come out to make the save as the faces stood tall in the ring. It must be mentioned that Raquel was booked very strongly in this match, catching Sky with a lariat that almost took her head off and then literally tossing her into the outside post. Raquel and Rhea certainly have a program in their future, but right now, it feels like the landscape of the division is being tweaked with Auska working heel on Sky and Rhea choosing to partner up with Sky, opposed to feuding with anyone in particular.
  • Penta and Xavier Woods faced off in singles action to kick off the show’s midpoint, so the pace of the match did not allow for these guys to deliver the kind of match they’re capable of, especially considering the match, which Penta won off the Mexican destroyer, worked to elevate the luchadore’s feud with New Day w/Waller. It was announced later in the show that Penta would square off with Kofi next week on RAW.
  • Becky Lynch is really hitting her stride with this current version of her heel character, and after delivering a terrific promo in the form of a backstage interview, she was successful in defending her IC title against Natalia. She used the armbar to get Natty to tap, and she almost didn’t let it go, but Lynch eventually let it go, only to slap the hold on Maxxine Dupri. That is when Nikki came out running to the ring despite receiving a music/video entrance (it looks way better than the guys who come out ‘for the save’ and take their sweet time soaking in the pop). Nikki and Lynch brawled and will likely face off soon at Clash in Paris.
  • In a way too over the top performance from GM Adam Pearce, Sheamus and Rusev were booked for Clash in Paris.
