Former WWE Superstar Shayna Baszler is reportedly testing out a new role behind the scenes with WWE NXT following her release from the company earlier this year. According to Bodyslam.net, Baszler was listed as one of the producers for the July 8, 2025, edition of NXT, where she worked alongside Chris Girard on the Kelani Jordan vs. Lainey Reid match.
Baszler, a former two-time NXT Women’s Champion and three-time WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion, was part of the May 2, 2025, round of talent cuts that saw several high-profile names, including Braun Strowman and Dakota Kai, depart the company. Her release was viewed under a slightly different light, considering it came just a couple of months after reported backstage tension with Jade Cargill.
Despite her release, it appears WWE is exploring the possibility of utilizing her extensive experience in a backstage capacity, similar to how the company has previously integrated former in-ring talent like Oney Lorcan (Chris Girard) into production roles.
The decision to involve Baszler offers some insight into how she potentially views her wrestling career. A legitimately tough fighter with an MMA background, some wondered if she might be a fit for AEW. Apparently, that's not in the cards. At least not now. Reports hint Baszler had already been contributing behind the scenes prior to her release, meaning she might have been preparing for a transition into this new role.
So too, working with WWE as a producer suggests the door remains open for her continued involvement with the company.
This news suggests that any potential backlash or lingering issues from a reported conflict with Jade Cargill must not be a hurdle. In March, reports surfaced of a confrontation between Baszler and Cargill after Cargill allegedly made offhand comments that upset several colleagues. Details are sketchy, but some sources claim Cargill suggested Baszler "needed to learn how to work," which didn't sit well given Cargill's relative inexperience. Tensions reportedly cooled after Cargill offered apologies, but it was clear she had rubbed some talent the wrong way.
For Baszler, however, the move into a producer role means WWE views her ability in the ring as worthy of working with others to come up with the creative for their matches. Whether this tryout leads to a permanent backstage position remains to be seen.
