Rey Mysterio has explained how his son, Dominik Mysterio , could become the greatest Mysterio of all time ahead of his AAA Mega Championship match at Worlds Collide. The reigning Intercontinental Champion will challenge El Hijo del Vikingo for the title on Friday (September 12) in Paradise, Nevada.
Rey Mysterio has long been feuding with Dominik Mysterio ever since the WWE Hall of Famer's son turned heel back in September 2022. The father and son duo fought at WrestleMania 39 as Dom continued to thrive as a singles star and a member of The Judgment Day.
The 50-year-old has done it all in WWE, including becoming a three-time world champion. He is the most celebrated luchador in pro wrestling history, who even spent time previously in AAA, like his son is doing now, thanks to WWE acquiring the Lucha Libre promotion.
Rey appeared on RAW Recap to hype up Worlds Collide and was asked for his thoughts on Dominik, should he defeat Vikingo and become Mega Champion: "I never became a Mega champion in AAA in the four years I was there. I give him his props if he overcomes that obstacle. Another thing a Mysterio has never done is become double champion, carrying a title from the US and Mexico. If he were to do that now, I'm gonna have to tip my mask twice to him."
Megan Morant asked Rey whether Dom will have cemented his legacy as the greatest Mysterio in history with a win: "I don't know if two titles define you as the greatest Mysterio of all time. This is gonna happen in one night, I've been doing this for 34 years, would one night overcome 34 years of career?"
The AAA Hall of Famer added, "He will start breaking ground to become potentially the greatest Mysterio of all time. That's always a possibility, and if he does it this Friday, he'll be getting closer and closer to that goal."
Dirty Dom has been busy defending his Intercontinental Championship in WWE while chasing Vikingo's Mega Championship in AAA. The 28-year-old boasts recent victories over WWE legend AJ Styles, including at SummerSlam.
Rey Mysterio's suggestion that Dominik still has a way to go to become the "greatest Mysterio of all time" is certainly not a viewpoint shared by the man himself. The biggest victory of his career came at WrestleMania 41 when he won the Intercontinental Championship.
Dom spoke on the WrestleMania Post-Show after that win in a fatal four-way match against Bon Breakker, Penta and Finn Balor and boasted being better than his father: "I feel like I’ve solidified myself. Everyone was saying, ‘You’ll never be able to fill Rey’s shoes. You’ll never be bigger than Rey Mysterio.’ Less than five years later, four years, I am the greatest Mysterio of all time, the greatest Intercontinental champion of all time."
Dirty Dom hit day 140 as Intercontinental Champion a day ago, as he eyes becoming a double champion at Worlds Collide. This is his fifth year on WWE's main roster, and he is ascending to the very top of the business, but perhaps has a way to go in reaching his father's level.
