Less than a month after his retirement match, news broke over the weekend revealing wrestling legend Sabu, real name Terry Brunk, had passed away at the age of just 60. Tributes to a man who influenced so many careers have been pouring in from every corner of the wrestling industry ever since, demonstrating just how widespread Sabu's impact was on the business.
Sorry, my words are a little frazzled in this vid, I am trying to speak from my heart…I dunno what else to say. #RIPSabupic.twitter.com/o6ehKa0IjK— taz (@OfficialTAZ) May 11, 2025
Even though Sabu wrestled just about everywhere throughout his career - he even snuck in an appearance in AEW in 2023 - the promotions he is more synonymous with is ECW. One of a handful of names that immediately springs to mind when you hear those three letters, and some of the others who you think of when you hear ECW have paid homage to Sabu upon learning of his passing.
Taz and Sabu's names go hand-in-hand when talking about ECW history, and Taz was one of the first to pay his respects on social media. "I would not have had the career that I have had, and I've been blessed to have if it wasn't for Sabu. That man got me over and he didn't have to get me over," Taz explained in a video on Twitter, telling a story about him and Sabu's debut match together in ECW in 1993.
Here we were just a few weeks ago at Wrestlecon. You never know when it’s the last time you’ll be together when it comes to this.Sabu was as irreplaceable in my life as he was in the industry. You all know how important he was to my career, and you know how much he meant to me… pic.twitter.com/WrCAPqkx6d— Rob Van Dam (@TherealRVD) May 12, 2025
Rob Van Dam also took to social media to honor the late legend. "Sabu was as irreplaceable in my life as he was in the industry," RVD wrote, sharing a photo of him and Sabu posing with other wrestlers at this year's WrestleCon just a few weeks ago, noting that you really never know when it will be the last time you see someone.
This is a gut punch. I was pushing this agenda again a few weeks ago after Sabu had his final match.RIP Sabu. One of a kind, absolute legend, and a true game changer for professional wrestling. https://t.co/wVgZ4ao42k— Sami Zayn (@SamiZayn) May 11, 2025
Sabu's influence on wrestling extends well beyond ECW alone. Sami Zayn pointed to a tweet he posted in 2022 lobbying for Sabu to be added to the WWE Hall of Fame. "This is a gut punch. I was pushing this agenda again a few weeks ago after Sabu had his final match," Zayn tweeted. Sadly, if Sabu is eventually inducted into the Hall of Fame, it will now be a posthumous induction.
A career that spanned more than three decades came to an end only a few weeks ago when Sabu wrestled his retirement match at a GCW show during WrestleMania weekend. A No Ropes Barbed Wire match against Joey Janela that was as fittingly brutal as most of the legend's other matches over the years.
Sabu's cause of death is yet to be revealed, but even though he rallied and managed to keep on wrestling, he has been suffering with health issues for the last few years. Sabu suffered a serious medical emergency at a convention in 2023 and noted needing various surgeries last year. RIP to a true legend, taken way too soon like so many wrestlers before him.
