Sami Zayn pulled off the first surprise of a busy weekend for WWE. After more than a year without a title around his waist, the “Honorary Uce” turned fan favorite walked out of SmackDown as the new United States Champion, defeating Solo Sikoa in a high-octane main event on Friday afternoon.
An incredibly gutsy performance by one of the best. For the first time, @SamiZayn is your United States Champion. #EtNouveaupic.twitter.com/Kye112wwst— Triple H (@TripleH) August 29, 2025
The build to this bout began earlier this month when Zayn scored a non-title victory over Sikoa, earning a crack at the gold. From the opening bell, however, it was Sikoa who dominated, grinding down the challenger and nearly securing a win with a brutal hip attack in the corner. But Zayn, fueled by the roaring crowd, fought his way back into the contest with a dive to the outside that shifted momentum — until Sikoa’s MFT allies interfered behind the referee’s back.
What could have been a repeat of previous controversial finishes instead turned into chaos that worked in Zayn’s favor. Jimmy Uso came to Zayn's aid, and moments later, Jacob Fatu emerged from the crowd to brawl with Talla Tonga, leaving all of Sikoa's helpers unable to help the champion retain his title. Zayn took advantage.
Zayn delivered his signature Blue Thunder Bomb for a close near fall before going for a Helluva Kick that Sikoa reversed. When Sikoa went for the Samoan Spike, Zayn ducked and sent Sikoa into the corner. He quickly hit the Helluva Kick to put Sikoa down for the three-count.
Triple H took to social media after the show to congratulate the new champion, tweeting:
“An incredibly gutsy performance by one of the best. For the first time, @SamiZayn is your United States Champion. #EtNouveau”
This will be Zayn's first-ever reign with the U.S. Title. He's been a multi-time tag team champion, WrestleMania main eventer, and Intercontinental Champion. The title win is arguably long overdue and the crowd reaction was overwhelmingly positive. Sikoa looked good as he did the job for Zayn.
Where this takes Zayn, MFT, and Jacob Fatu is unclear. The hope for Zayn fans is that this is a doorway to even bigger opportunities. He's been one of WWE's top talents, even in a lesser role. Perhaps one day he'll get his long-awaited world title run.
