AEW star Samoa Joe was recently interviewed by CBS Sports’ Shakiel Mahjouri. There, he spoke about a lot of different topics, including the match tribute at Crown Jewel, AJ Styles and John Cena retiring, and now his own retirement has become a topic.
Joe revealed in the interview that he’s likely to be retiring after his AEW contract expires. It’s unclear when his contract will expire. He’s been with the company since April 2022, after his second departure from WWE. Joe said:
“I’d say most likely, and honestly I think it’s for a lot of reasons and I think most of them are responsible. Obviously you never want to outstay your welcome in this industry and I have been fortunate that I have been able to be involved with it for over 25 years now. The other thing too is many of us want to preserve what we can of our health for our latter years so it is something that is probably the most likely scenario. But hey, it is an unusual world and unusual opportunities come up." (h/t: WrestlePurists)
Before AEW and WWE, Joe’s career began in Ring of Honor and then later in Total Nonstop Action. Joe’s TNA career lasted for 10 years, and it was a memorable one. He had rivalries with the likes of AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, Kurt Angle, and Christian Cage.
Well, Joe’s career isn’t over yet because he has a huge match coming up this Saturday (October 18) at the AEW WrestleDream pay-per-view. “Hangman” Adam Page is going to be defending his AEW World Championship against Joe.
If Joe does beat Page, this will be his second title reign as the AEW World Champion. His last title reign was from December 2023 to April 2024.
At the moment, Joe, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Katsuyori Shibata are the AEW World Trios Champions. Joe is also a two-time AEW TNT Champion. The wrestling vet in 2023 returned to the place that made him — Ring of Honor. For over 500 days, he held the ROH World Television Title.
So it appears that Joe will be the next wrestler to retire. Styles' retirement is going to be in 2026, while Cena is set for December 13, 2025. Hopefully, Joe gets a respectful retirement match because, like Styles and Cena, he's another legend in the business.
