Giulia was thought to be a future face of the WWE for a long time; instead, she has seemingly become a punchline.
On Friday’s episode of Smackdown, “The Beautiful Madness” lost the Women’s United States Championship to Chelsea Green. Immediately, two things stood out from the match.
First was how it ended. Green got the roll-up after Giulia attacked her Secret Service partner, Alba Fyre. Second, and more damningly, was how long it lasted – 97 seconds, woefully short even for TV, which made her lash out on social media afterward:
“I’m angry at myself, Chelsea…….at EVERYTHING. That’s real funny dumbass. Just watch. I’m going tear it all apart.”
It raises the question: is Giulia’s WWE tenure a major mistake in her career, and can it still be saved?
To understand how Giulia got here, one must first take a look at her career.
Initially working for Ice Ribbon, Giulia joined Stardom in 2019 and had a monstrous ascent towards recognition. In her four and a half years with that promotion, she won multiple tournaments and titles and established herself as a hard hitter with global appeal.
In 2024, Giulia took the next step of her career when she joined Marigold. After a few matches, she finally made her WWE debut, confronting then-NXT Women’s Champion Roxanne Perez at No Mercy. She would win the title at New Year’s Evil.
It was at that point that Giulia forged a link with the woman to whom she has been frequently compared: then-Women’s North American Champion Stephanie Vaquer. The two met in a title-for-title match at Roadblock, which the former lost.
The night after WrestleMania 41, Giulia appeared on main-roster television for the first time, as she and Perez attacked Vaquer and Iyo Sky. That, however, was not her official introduction there, as she still had some final NXT commitments to fulfill. The said introduction came on May 16, when general manager Nick Aldis announced her as SmackDown’s newest member.
Just over a month later, Giulia clinched the Women’s United States Championship from Zelina Vega. It made sense at the time – Vega’s reign had been largely uninspired (she did not defend even once), and she needed a repackage. Unfortunately, WWE would enter the same pitfalls with the new queen – no PLE defenses, a lack of screen time and character evolution, and general fan apathy.
Not even partnering Giulia with Kiana James could save the reign, and it has led to the present conundrum: is this tenure worth the dream?
There are multiple comparisons that can be made with Giulia in regards to her WWE tenure.
Obviously, the first one is with Vaquer. “La Primera” herself had a rather inauspicious start to her main-roster tenure, having some matches, then being sidelined for a month. That notion, however, went away after she won the Women’s World Championship.
Giulia has so far been unable to meet, let alone exceed those heights, but it is as not as if she is not trying. A lack of charisma cannot be a reason, because her look sells itself well. Nor can it be a language barrier, as neither Vaquer nor Iyo Sky is American, yet that has not hindered their successes.
Speaking of Sky, “The Genius of the Sky” has become not just WWE’s best-booked joshi, but its best-booked Japanese wrestler ever. She has been a multiple-time world champion, appears prominently on TV, and gets consistently good crowd reactions – things Giulia can only dream of right now.
It is not just in WWE, though. Thekla, Giulia’s former stablemate in Stardom, has been a constant presence for AEW through her stable, the Triangle of Madness. She, Julia Hart, and Skye Blue have frequent matches and segments, and they have been booked to stand tall on a good number of them.
That may be the thing that eats away at Giulia the most. Back in Japan, Thekla was her co-star and sidekick. In America, however, their roles have been reversed, and it is stunning to think of given their history.
Thus, given all those notions and what has transpired, Giulia has every right to start regretting joining WWE despite her dream. The question now, however, is: can WWE still save her from falling to irrelevance?
To answer that question, there is one: move Giulia to Raw. Vaquer is the champion, and they have history. Giulia will have a chip on her shoulder entering in, and it may be enough to give her a significant push. That will require much convincing for WWE to do, but it should hopefully rehabilitate one of its biggest signings of this decade.
Until then, however, all Giulia can do is wait. It does not matter how long – she has to, then one day, the light at the end of this dark tunnel will appear…
