The Oklahoma Sooners wrestling program enjoyed a win last offseason, signing the son of legendary WWE wrestler Mark Henry, Jacob Henry, to join the team. However, Henry pivoted, opting to walk on and join the Sooners' football team. Given his size at 6'2, 281 pounds, Henry was a natural fit to join the Sooners at defensive tackle.

The redshirt freshman hasn't seen any playing time for the Sooners, but that hasn't stopped him from putting in plenty of work in developing under defensive tackles coach Todd Bates, even though he figures to likely remain on the scout team this season.

However, he is carving out a future career path for himself, both on and off the gridiron. This time, he'll be in a ring, just like his dad.

Henry will be joining 11 other collegiate athletes as part of the WWE Recruits NIL program. This program is designed to support US-based college athletes who decide to train as wrestlers, and is supposed to build a pipeline for athletes to take their first steps to joining the WWE and working their way up.

With it being a relatively new program, there aren't many who have made it up to the main "big leagues" of WWE, but several WWE "NIL" alumni have found success and signed with the WWE. Joe Spivak, a former defensive tackle for Northwestern, is the current WWE NXT Tag Team Champion under the name "Tank Ledger".

While I don't want to accuse anyone of favoritism, the WWE loves legacy storylines, and Henry provides a perfect opportunity for them to bring in the legacy of a beloved wrestler. Henry retired as a World Heavyweight Champion and ECW Champion in 2017, joining the WWE Hall of Fame in 2018.

Oklahoma actually has a bit of a WWE pipeline already. Jake Hager, aka Jack Swagger, a former two-sport athlete for the Sooners, won three different WWE championship belts and a slew of other awards in the smaller professional wrestling leagues. Steve Williams, formerly known as "Dr. Death", was a three-time world heavyweight champion back when the league was the WWF. Williams was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021.

While he's not a wrestler, legendary commentator Jim "JR" Ross is a Sooner alum and was the former Head of Talent Relations for WWE. Ross is one of the most recognized figures in the state of Oklahoma and is beloved by many.
