Eric Bischoff has been a vocal opponent of AEW for years. The former WCW vice president and WWE general manager has been outspoken about his distaste for the company and how it approaches its programming. From his issues with the company's creative decisions to his disdain for the overall in-ring product, Bischoff has taken shots at every opportunity.
During a recent interview on Dallas radio station '105.3 The Fan,' Khan finally gave his thoughts on Bischoff and his outspoken nature.
"I don't really care what he says," Khan said. "We've done really, really well, and we've got a great thing going with AEW. We've got something really, really to be proud of. We not only are going to be for years to come doing the shows on TBS and TNT, we're going to set the record for the longest run of pro wrestling ever on TNT, in fact."
For the most part, Bischoff's comments come off as sour grapes. AEW has reached significant heights since its inception, and Bischoff hasn't been consulted on any of it. However, at times, he does have some good points.
AEW has been poor in terms of creativity. Too many storylines have started and never reached a conclusion. There are far too many dream matches with no purpose other than to appease the (small but engaged) hardcore section of the fanbase. Multiple big-name additions have failed to produce since arriving at the company. Bischoff has had issues with all of these things, and rightly so.
Still, Bischoff's approach has been all wrong. Yes, Khan often appears to ignore constructive criticism. He funds AEW, he likes the product and they've been successful, so he has the right to do things his way. However, the company's decline in ratings and attendance tells an important story. Bischoff may have an issue with the company and its leadership, but he knows that AEW is good for professional wrestling.
Nevertheless, it's good to see Khan clapping back. Bischoff has been left unchecked for too long. There's enough negative coverage of AEW without a genuine name within the industry bashing it at every turn. Khan would have been better served by fixing some of the issues within AEW and letting the company do the talking.
It will be interesting to see how Bischoff responds. However, if AEW can find some consistency with its creativity and begin showcasing talent in a better way, it's hard to see where his criticism can come from. Everything Bischoff has an issue with can be fixed, but it's on Khan to accept there's a problem, and unfortunately, he never seems willing to see where things are going wrong.
