After a weekend full of professional wrestling, AEW appears to have prevailed after their well-received All Out pay-per-view. The show, which provided several surprise appearances and a major title change in the women's division, was considered by multiple sports and wrestling news websites as superior to WWE's Wrestlepalooza, which ran shortly before All Out's conclusion.
With a well-received event in All Out, and a well-received residency at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia that recently ended, AEW looks to capitalize on their success. In a wide-ranging interview with TheSportster, AEW President and CEO Tony Khan spoke about the surprises ahead on tonight's AEW Dynamitefrom Pittsburgh, PA, Mark Briscoe's success as part of the future of AEW, and Kris Statlander's first challenger as the new AEW Women's Champion.
As one half of one of the best tag teams of all time, Mark Briscoe has charted a new course for himself as a singles competitor after officially joining AEW in 2023. After a run as the Ring of Honor Champion, Briscoe has found success as part of the Conglomeration, and was on the business end of some pretty wild spots against MJF in their "Tables 'N Tacks" match at All Out.
Khan spoke highly of their match, and called Briscoe one of the current top stars in AEW.
The fans love Mark Briscoe everywhere we go. He's such a great hero for the fans, and I was so happy for Mark Briscoe to get that huge win in that awesome TNT - Tables 'N Tacks Match — versus MJF. What a fantastic fight they had. It was an outstanding match and another one of the great highlights of this awesome pay-per-view, so I was really happy for Mark Briscoe.
Khan compliments his opponent, MJF, in his losing effort against Briscoe.
I have a lot of respect for what he did to have two amazing matches in two different countries. Incredibly, to go from Mexico, be an arena in in Mexico City, and then to go to Toronto, and in less than 24 hours to have two amazing matches, wrestling Místico for the CMLL World Title, and then wrestling Mark Briscoe in this Tables N' Tacks match at AEW All Out. It's amazing.
Congratulations to CMLL, our great partners on 92 years [in wrestling]. They had an amazing anniversary show, and I'm proud that AEW was able to come and be a part of it. I think MJF, even though he's not a great person, he was a great representative in some ways to have incredible matches and be a great wrestler for AEW in CMLL, and when MJF focuses on the wrestling, I do think that's when he's at his best.
With Briscoe having some unfinished business against the Don Callis Family, Khan hypes the six-man tag match between AEW Unified Champion Kazuchika Okada, Konosuke Takeshita, and Hechicero against Briscoe, Hologram, and their mystery partner, one that Khan is still sure to make fans happy, even if they may already know who it is.
I don't think they've left that much mystery to it the way that the phone call went with The Conglomeration. I think the fans have a pretty good sense of who it's going to be, and I think it's really great. I'm excited for this match to have The Conglomeration going against that great trio of Okada, Takeshita, and Hechicero.
Among multiple surprises from AEW All Out, one of the major moments of the evening was Kris Statlander defeating "Timeless" Toni Storm, Thekla, and Jamie Hayter to win the AEW Women's World Championship. A former TBS Champion, Statlander is now the first woman in AEW to hold both championships.
Khan calls Statlander's win a highlight of All Out, but warns of her first major challenger, the interim Ring of Honor Women's World Champion Mina Shirakawa, on tonight's Dynamite, and predicts Shirakawa will be out for revenge.
Kris Statlander took that championship by surprise from Timeless Toni Storm, who had maybe bitten off for the first time more than Timeless Toni Storm could chew, as Timeless Toni Storm was such a great champion for over seven months, defending the title against all comers, and finally, she tried to take on three top challengers in one night. It cost her. I think Mina Shirakawa, the person who's closest to Timeless Toni Storm, everybody in the world really wants that title. She wants payback for Toni, too.
With a significant tailwind behind them and the opportunity to capitalize on their All Out success, Tony Khan has a stacked show for tonight's AEW Dynamite. With two major matches on the card, AEW has also stated that Khan has a major announcement to tell fans about during tonight's show.
Although rumors have swirled regarding several possibilities, Khan remains tight-lipped about his major announcement on tonight's Dynamite, and says fans have a lot to look forward to on the show. He reinforces that, in spite of the surging ticket prices WWE has recently been criticized for, his focus for AEW has always been fan experience and great wrestling.
I think we have really always made it very family-friendly. From the very first AEW show, it's always been important to have affordable tickets for the fans, and we've always kept the entry price very affordable. That's been consistent for AEW from the very beginning that there's been affordable tickets in the arena. I have to say that it's really been over the years, for me, something that we've always made a point of emphasis. We bring it up, time after time throughout the year.
For me, most of the focus is going to be on putting the wrestling show together, focusing on getting the best wrestling in the world and the best matches and putting the best shows together. But that's always been the philosophy of AEW is we want to make it so families can come to the show. We've always kept affordable tickets in the arena. I do think in professional wrestling, AEW is absolutely the best value you get for your tickets.
AEW Dynamite airs live tonight on TBS from the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, PA, beginning at 8pm ET, and will be simulcast on HBO Max. Check your local listings for start times in your area.
