On this week’s SmackDown in San Antonio, a relentless Cody Rhodes frog-splashed John Cena through a table to eventually force a signature out of him on their SummerSlam rematch contract. Rhodes had to do some scrambling because Cena had outright informed everyone that he wouldn’t be able to compete at the PLE due to an ongoing filming commitment with Netflix.
The crowd started booing him, but the Undisputed WWE Champion tried explaining to the fans that he’s emotionally exhausted and could barely make it to the arena for SmackDown last night. Coming on to Rhodes, ‘The Cenation Leader’ said that he could have his rematch for the gold at any of the forthcoming events like Clash in Paris or even Crown Jewel in Perth, but not SummerSlam.
After revealing his status for ‘The Biggest Party of the Summer’, Cena left the ring and tried to exit the place. However, a hellbent Rhodes chased him down on the ramp, and they started brawling. Back in the ring, ‘The American Nightmare’ clocked Cena’s skull with the title belt. This is something he couldn’t do at WrestleMania 41. However, Rhodes didn’t hold back in pulling the trigger this time around.

When Rhodes made Cena sign on the dotted line, the Peacemaker actor was already down and out from the frog splash he’d incurred. ‘The Last Real Champion’ was in no state to realize that he was being forced to sign up for a Street Fight at SummerSlam. It’d be interesting to see if that would be enough to mitigate the hate from their WrestleMania showdown.
Before John Cena came out on SmackDown, Cody Rhodes addressed the fans in attendance for a while. He talked about a recent post he made on X, something that he believes was scrutinized beyond its actual weight. The said post sparked speculation among the fans that the ex-AEW EVP’s evil arc is upon them. Even though he tried to shrug it off during his promo, there was something that the fans spotted with Rhodes’ look this week.
In a backstage shot, one could see him wearing the same glasses that The Rock wore on Raw’s Netflix debut, let alone the watch that ‘The Final Boss’ posted on Instagram before his return on SmackDown to seek Rhodes’ soul. This picked up steam in numerous circles on social media. Not that long ago, ‘The Prodigal Son’ did mention that it would be sloppy to completely discard The Great One’s offer.

Does that mean Rhodes has secretly acceded to ‘The Final Boss’? Many wrestling pundits and fans believe that his upcoming clash with Cena at SummerSlam might be the litmus test for Rhodes. Will he ditch idolizing the high moral grounds that he’s accustomed to, or has he already sold out? This wouldn’t take long to unfold.
A couple of weeks ago on SmackDown, Drew McIntyre told Cody Rhodes to his face that he would root for him to dethrone John Cena at SummerSlam. It’s because the Scot made his intentions clear about chasing the world title, and he’d love nothing more than ripping it out of Rhodes’ waist.
They haven’t been involved in a singles match since last February, when McIntyre pinned Rhodes after Solo Sikoa‘s interference. If Rhodes does regain the world title at SummerSlam, he would inevitably cross paths with ‘The Scottish Psychopath’. The latter’s booking, however, has been subpar this year.
He’s currently slated to join forces with Logan Paul to battle Randy Orton and Jelly Roll at SummerSlam. It’s hard to predict where McIntyre goes from there. A lengthy title feud with Rhodes might be just what he needs to get back on track. However, there seems to be a long way to go until then.
