Who is Danhausen? Get to Know WWE’s New Signee
WWE

Out of this box burst several dancing women in face paint as former AEW talent Danhausen creeped his way to the ring. After leaving a jar of teeth by Michael Cole, Danhausen posed in the ring and disappeared in a puff of smoke and chorus of boos.

There are plenty of reasons Mr. Hausen had a mostly negative reception. Part of it can be attributed to the fans who knew him from his time in AEW and didn’t take kindly to him. Another aspect is the build to the crate’s reveal, as some expected someone like Chris Jericho. Whatever the myriad of reasons could be for the reaction, he’s here for a very nice and very evil time.

Who is Danhausen?

Once a favorite of the independent scene, Donovan Danhausen’s career started in Michigan’s Metro Pro Wrestling promotion in 2013. Later that decade, he moved to Black Label Pro and F1RST Wrestling. In 2019, he signed with Ring of Honor, where his stock as a performer grew.

Making his debut against Shane Taylor for the ROH World Television Championship, he’d make occasional appearances. Most notably, he took part in a 20-Man Battle Royal at February 2020’s ROH Free Enterprise. At that year’s ROH Final Battle, Danhausen would defeat Brian Johnson to earn his contract with the company.

The vaudevillian character of Danhausen will likely be more striking than his in-ring history. Self-described as “Conan O’Brien possessed by a demon,” Danhausen often speaks in the third person with mannerisms similar to O’Brien and the Mark Hamill version of DC Comics’ Joker. The theatrical campiness of this awkward wraith has made Danhausen a hit on the independent scene, where he sold a lot of merch, as he did in All Elite Wrestling.

Away from wrestling, Danhausen enjoys life with his wife, Canadian burlesque dancer Lou Lou la Duchesse de Rière, and her daughter and their son. His wife was one of the dancers accompanying him last night at WWE Elimination Chamber for his grand debut.

All Elite Wrestling

When one thinks of Danhausen and AEW, his time can be summarized by an initial warm reception that turned into noticeable unpopularity. This resulted in a crowd and online malaise that soon saw his removal from programming.

His tenure started at 2022’s AEW Dynamite: Beach Break, during Adam Cole’s Lights Out Match with Orange Cassidy. Danhausen would then align himself with HOOK as Hookhausen before joining Cassidy and the Best Friends. His last match in AEW would be at 2023’s Worlds End 2023 – Zero Hour in a battle royal to challenge for the TNT Championship.

Overall, his last appearance in any Tony Khan-owned wrestling production was at 2024’s ROH Final Battle, where he aided Atlantis Jr. in overcoming Mansoor by equalizing his MxM partner, Mason Madden. Though he asked for a contract release, he remained active on the independent scene as AEW extended his contract due to his 2023 torn pectoral. In AEW, he had a total of 9 televised matches, and a large chunk of them were on AEW Rampage.

At first, fans warmly received Danhausen. His gimmick quickly garnered a following as his comedy and character were recognizable and different. To that effect, he’d move a lot of merch and had a great relationship with fan artists as a result. Though his character was infectious, fans had an expectation for that to go with high-caliber action, which he somewhat lacked. This, coupled with a friendship with CM Punk (who left on less-than-great terms) and a tiredness with his routine, catalyzed his eventual All Elite decline.

What will Danhausen bring to WWE?

Furthermore, Danhausen’s unique speech pattern and voice, combined with his face paint, will see something different. It’s a performance art that will undoubtedly see him as a top comedic act. Considering the likes of R-Truth, Akira Tozawa, and Kit Wilson also check those boxes, Danhausen will be in good company. I expect him to be a mid-card talent who puts over superstars on the rise. Given WWE’s penchant for “making moments,” his clips may go viral.

That said, he won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. He’s not mine, that’s for sure. But the company will assuredly market him heavily as though he were a mascot. Additionally, he’s already mixed it up with other former AEW talent in WWE, such as CM Punk, Ricky Saints, and Ethan Page.

Will Danhausen Succeed in WWE?

His poor debut at Elimination Chamber could come from many things. Fans who watch AEW, who also consume WWE, who weren’t already fans to begin with, will remain unhappy, as some were there. Plus, the fans were likely expecting someone or something else to be in that crate. That’s not an indictment on Danhausen, but moreso the booking. The creative direction under Triple H set up this newbie for disaster.

Fans expected something bigger, and given that they spend money on the ESPN app, that’s valid. Perhaps debuting on television would have served him better. While I think Danhausen can easily recover if the company leans into his unpopularity for comedic purposes, this further cements the incompetence at WWE’s current level of booking. I wouldn’t be surprised if Paul Levesque and his current team are ultimately replaced or spearheaded by more capable hands at this pace.

For Danhausen, he’s no stranger to mishandling. From not being featured on AEW to being thrown into a den full of rabid wolves in WWE, he’s sure to find a way to thrive. Of course, he will, because he has a new crop of people to curse.
