MJF is still the AEW World Champion.
At Sunday’s Dynasty, “The Devil” retained the title against Kenny Omega after a high-stakes main event. The ending came when MJF exploited a ref bump to hit a piledriver onto a table outside the ring. It marked the fifth (televised) defense of his second reign, which began at World’s End late in December.
As with any champion, the question now looms: who is next? Here are three early possible contenders.
Chris Jericho is back.
The former World Champion had his first match in nearly over a year earlier on Sunday, losing to Ricochet. Nevertheless, just being back in the ring itself represents a win for the “Ayatollah of Rock n’ Rolla”.
Since Double or Nothing is considered AEW’s version of WrestleMania, it demands big names and big fights. Jericho fits the role of a marquee challenger for MJF, given their history.
Andrade also competed at World’s End, losing to Darby Allin in a match that proved to be less hostile than expected. Afterwards, both men showed respect to each other.
Despite the defeat, Andrade could still have MJF in his sights, if their confrontation after an indie event nearly two months ago is any indication. Their rivalry deserves to be settled once and for all, and Double or Nothing is the perfect place to do it.
Speaking of Allin, he registered one of two wins by a solo male face on Sunday (three if counting Jack Perry’s National title defense during the Zero Hour pre-show). That warrants a major reward.
MJF vs. Allin is a wrestling fan’s dream: the snobby technician who wears suits to the ring against the troubled daredevil who covers half his face in paint. The contrast cannot be clearer, and they deserve to show its magic once more.
The AEW fandom is still reeling from Adam Page’s permanent excision from the AEW World title picture at Revolution. Now, Omega, who had deemed himself the “God of Professional Wrestling”, has fallen as well.
It is clear that new heroes are needed to unseat MJF, and those three men appear to be the frontrunners to try doung so…
