Throughout 2023 and 2024, ‘Hangman’ Adam Page and Swerve Strickland engaged in one of the most personal, violent rivalries ever seen in professional wrestling, putting in a contender for one of the best rivalries in AEW history. Blood-drinking deathmatches, home invasions, arson, and more made up this insane feud, though it seems like things could be changing.
On the April 2 episode of AEW Dynamite, Swerve Strickland and Adam Page came face-to-face in a backstage segment, jawing at one another, with Page stating his obsession with Strickland never getting his hands back on the world title, and Strickland telling Page to let things go. Strickland admitted that he deserved the heinous retribution Page enacted, halting their back and forth. Page was dumbfounded at Strickland’s admittance, and much of his hatred dissipated at that moment. Strickland and Page could now well be on their way to making amends, and we will assess why that is both a good and bad idea.
Adam Page and Swerve Strickland have been feuding for nearly two years, off and on, but fans have not gotten tired of it at all. They have a magical chemistry and an authentic hatred on a level that is rare. Pro wrestling in the modern era has been lacking lifelong rivals who are synonymous with one another, but Strickland & Page have that potential to feud forever.
Keeping them as enemies and not following down tropes of making amends and finding mutual respect is something not often done in wrestling, and AEW could really make history if they go down this route.
Right now, Adam Page & Swerve Strickland are both two of AEW’s biggest babyfaces. For two ‘good guys’ to have such a vicious hatred of one another perhaps undermines their roles as babyfaces and their growth to become the face of the company.
If they can make amends, then it could in turn make them even bigger babyfaces, showing examples of forgiveness and growth. In the case of Page, his character has gone through ups and downs, battling with demons, and finding it in himself to let go of his hatred would make sense in the context of his character.
Although it might make some sense for ‘Hangman’ Adam Page to grow and let things go… it is also a stretch. In the real world, it would take an unimaginable amount of patience to forgive someone who invaded your home, threatened your family, drank your blood, burned down your home, and injected a needle into your face, along with simply just hating you and trying to put an end to your career.
Page & Strickland could look like chumps if they just forgive each other and become friends, threatening the overall integrity and legacy of their storyline together. It is arguably not worth the risk to make them allies in AEW.
If Swerve Strickland and Adam Page become friends, then they can become enemies again in an instant. Building up their relationship, if handled correctly, could make them a brilliant partnership in AEW, eventually setting up a heart-breaking betrayal down the line.
This would be a great moment, and it would ensure that they do in fact remain lifelong rivals and enemies. There have been many great betrayals and ends of friendships, and this could be up there with the best if AEW goes down that route.
