Why AEW Is Right To Turn Adam Page Babyface
Max Gersh / The Commercial Appeal, Memphis Commercial Appeal via Imagn Content Services, LLC

It had been teased for several weeks, but ‘Hangman’ Adam Page is firmly back to being a babyface. After a feud kicked off with MJF, a change has been felt within the bitter, angry, and vindictive persona of Page, who has shown remorse for ending the career of Christopher Daniels, and briefly seemed to consider making amends with Swerve Strickland.

The February 19 episode of AEW Dynamite saw Page stand up for Daniels, talk back to MJF, and show some appreciation for the crowd getting behind him. It hasn’t been long since Page turned heel, finding himself becoming a bad guy just a year ago, but it is safe to say that turning him back to the babyface side so soon is in fact the correct call, and there are several reasons as to why.

Battling With Good & Evil Fits With His Character

Adam Page Has Always Been Battling His Demons

  • Changing sides is consistent with Page’s character
  • He has previously fought through his personal demons in AEW
  • This is the next natural step in his development

When Adam Page lost his chance at winning the AEW World Title at All Out 2019, it set him on a thrilling ride in terms of character and storytelling, initially seeming to have fun being the likable and endearing guy who likes to share a drink with the audience, before the narrative of a struggling and depressive borderline alcoholic who lacked confidence and was self-destructive emerged. It was a wonderful tale that saw him find new friends, gain self confidence, and disregard the need to drink when he finally became world champion.

Page turned heel last year due to being consumed by his own demons and hatred for someone who had done bad to him (Swerve Strickland), who in turn started getting love from the audience who used to love him, and it made the world of sense. However, Page realizing the error of his ways, seeking the respect and forgiveness of the audience, and looking to right his wrongs is all consistent with his character since day one, so a babyface turn was inevitable and certainly the correct call in the saga of The Hangman.

AEW Is In Need Of A Number One Babyface

AEW Is Missing Red-Hot Good Guys

  • One of the biggest differences between AEW and WWE right now is hot babyfaces
  • Page is perpetually over with the AEW audience
  • He is better off being a babyface than a heel right now

WWE’s current boom can be attributed to a number of different things, but one key factor is the creation of big babyface stars in Cody Rhodes, Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, Roman Reigns, and more. In AEW, this held true several years back, coinciding with their boom between 2019 and 2022, but in today’s product they are lacking that red hot good guy. Adam Page was one of those men in AEW’s early years, and he has the potential to be again.

Page is naturally likable, he feels like someone who could legitimately take on the world, and he has already proven to be good enough to carry the load of being a top guy. Having him as a heel for too long would’ve been a waste of his potential to be a real change for AEW’s current momentum, so this recent turn to the good side is a clever call to try and propel him up the card and make him super over once more.

MJF Will Benefit From Working With A Strong Babyface

Adam Page’s Babyface Turn Can Help MJF

  • MJF has been struggling for momentum
  • He has had the wrong feuds over the last year
  • MJF vs. Adam Page can help both men

Adam Page’s babyface turn doesn’t just benefit him, but it benefits his current rival, MJF. The longest AEW World Champion MJF has felt like a shell of his former self in recent months, having some disappointing feuds with the likes of Adam Cole and Jeff Jarrett, and looking rather uncaring towards the content he’s been handed.

All he needs is the perfect dance partner to help regain his own momentum, and a babyface Adam Page can be exactly that. They are both world class storytellers, and they can help elevate one another thanks to Page’s babyface turn.

Adam Page Deserves Another World Title Run

His Initial World Title Reign Was Unfulfilling

  • Page should be a babyface when he wins the world title again
  • He needs to redeem the disappointment of his last run with gold
  • Turning him babyface now can lead to a lengthy title pursuit

Adam Page defeated Kenny Omega in 2021 to become the new AEW World Champion, though AEW were slow to follow up on the momentum of his win. Page would eventually defend his newly won gold against Bryan Danielson in a pair of all-time classics, but from there things were pretty slow. His feud with Adam Cole was pretty standard and bland, and before long he’d lost the title to CM Punk in a very awkward program.

Page is deserving of an AEW World Title reign that fans remember, but doing so as a heel wouldn’t quite hit the same mark. He needs to now turn his attention back to the gold, but going on yet another babyface journey to the title, and then finally be booked like a strong, dominant, fighting champion. Turning babyface is the first step to getting to that point.
