The Hardy Boyz are quite possibly the most intriguing individuals who could be involved in WWE's TNA invasion angle on NXT. The legendary tag team were notably absent from this past week's episode of NXT after a swarm of TNA talent, fronted by Matt Cardona, invaded the developmental brand.
Matt and Jeff Hardy have appeared on NXT since WWE's partnership with TNA began in January of this year. The iconic TNA World Tag Team Champions faced former NXT Tag Team Champions Nathan Frazer and Axiom in March at Roadblock. They have since been featuring solely on TNA iMPACT.
Many expected to see The Hardys appear on NXT when the likes of Matt Cardona, Eric Young, Jessica McKay (formerly Billie Kay), Cassie Lee (formerly Peyton Royce), Mike Santana, and Moose invaded their 'rival' brand. But the tag champions weren't part of the segment, which saw NXT head booker Shawn Michaels promise retaliation.
Fightful Select reports that The Hardy Boys have been pitched to appear in the NXT-TNA invasion angle despite their absence on Tuesday night. It will be intriguing to see where their allegiances lie, given their history with WWE, where they became eight-time tag champions, and include significant singles success.
The Hardys are entering the twlight of their careers and inclusion in the invasion would tie in with Matt's admission made earlier this year. He told Ariel Helwani that the duo had turned down a Hall of Fame induction because they wanted one last run with WWE: "I think we would like maybe one last hurrah with WWE, and that could even be possible while working with TNA too, so we’ll see. It would be nice to still have the most limited schedule we could have, which could optimise how much time we could spend at home with our families and our kids."
Matt, 51, chose to leave WWE in 2020 when his contract expired, while Jeff, 48, was released a year later, and the pair have since appeared in AEW along with other promotions. A final run in WWE could make for some intriguing storylines, such as re-igniting the rivalry between Jeff and CM Punk and a feud with The Wyatt Sicks.
While The Hardy's WWE returns are currently set to only tie in with TNA's invasion of NXT, it doesn't mean they won't be appearing on the main roster. There could be a situation where the drama from Tuesday nights spills over to RAW and SmackDown.
The brothers have yet to work in the Triple H regime of WWE, and the company's chief content officer holds his former colleagues in high regard. He posted a tweet hyping up their appearance on NXT earlier this year: "Two men who have re-defined tag-team wrestling for over 25 years. The Hardy Boyz have reached the pinnacle of our industry (and often jumped off of it) to the amazement of fans worldwide."
Triple H worked with the Hardys during the heights of their WWE careers, particularly Jeff who beat him to become WWE Champion in a triple threat match at Armageddon 2008. Any ranking of legendary tag teams will likely see the brothers ranked alongside D-Generation X, consisting of The Game and Shawn Michaels.
The NXT-TNA angle could open the door for a possible war between those teams, not in the ring, but backstage, with the Hardys trying to use their knowledge of DX to help TNA gain control. Matt has shown he has a creative mind for the business, which could help TNA and WWE build storylines between their talent.
