Despite being a heel for most of his time in WWE, Bron Breakker has been a fan favorite for years. His combination of size, speed, and high-impact moves has made him a must-watch on television. After conquering WWE’s developmental NXT brand, Breakker is now making an impact on Monday Night Raw. With all of the company’s recent injuries, is the son of the “dog-faced gremlin” Rick Steiner finally poised to become the “top dog” on Monday nights?
This past weekend, Breakker’s faction leader, Seth Rollins, sustained a major shoulder injury during WWE’s Crown Jewel Perth pay-per-view. The injury was a result of a coast-to-coast flying headbutt from Rollins on his opponent, Cody Rhodes. Rollins appeared to land wrong on his shoulder, and though he finished the match, he favored that arm the rest of the way. The Vision leader wore a sling backstage on Monday night and was seemingly written off the show. Breakker and fellow Vision faction member Bronson Reed assaulted Rollins and left him lying in the ring, effectively bouncing the “Visionary” from his own group.
With John Cena’s retirement tour almost over and AJ Styles winding down his career as well, injuries have left some spots open at the top of the men’s card on both of WWE’s main roster brands. Remember, Kevin Owens, Rey Mysterio, Chad Gable, Otis, Austin Theory, Ilja Dragunov, Bo Dallas, Jacob Fatu, and Gunther are all on the shelf as well. So, who will fill those voids? Breakker is certainly in line to be considered for a top spot on the Raw roster. He just speared the current World Heavyweight Champion into oblivion and took his spot as leader of the Vision. Could he be the one to take his title as well?
If you are looking to fill the top spot on Raw, you could certainly do worse than Breakker. He is a two-time NXT Champion and an NXT Tag Team Champion. Since hitting the main roster, the “unpredictable bada–” as commentators constantly call him, has twice captured the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Now that Rollins will most likely have to vacate the title in favor of surgery, who would be a better choice to claim his title than the man who was responsible for taking him out on television?
CM Punk can certainly claim that he should be in the mix. He just won a match to become the Number One Contender to Rollins’ gold. When a title is vacated, usually, there is a match or tournament to claim the vacated title. So, even though Punk has a claim, he will have to beat someone to be the champ. LA Knight and Jey Uso lost to Punk in that Number One Contenders Match, so they could be involved in a match or tournament. That just leaves Breakker and Gunther, if his broken orbital bone is healed enough for him to get cleared to wrestle, Logan Paul, and Dominik Mysterio as other options.
If we are being honest, Mysterio already has a title to defend, and Knight and Uso both just lost a match to be in contention. Paul is good on a mic and great at creating memorable moments in matches, but he is not ready to be the top dog on Raw. He doesn’t possess the necessary foundational skills yet. That leaves former champ Gunther or Breakker to be the one to wrestle Punk for the belt. Gunther is rumored to be close to returning, but WWE may not have time to wait for him to get cleared. It has to be Breakker.
Breakker vs. Punk has to be the match to crown the new World Heavyweight Champion. No matter how we get there, Raw GM Adam Pierce selecting these two or a tournament to crown the champ, it has to come down to that match. When Rollins returns, it has to be one of these two that he faces to regain his gold. Punk is his sworn enemy, and Breakker is the man who took him out. What other storyline would make more sense? Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes are also top Rollins nemeses, but they are both assigned to SmackDown, despite all their appearances on Raw.
If Punk wins, Uso and Knight will both want shots at the title after their recent feud, but it will most likely be the Vision that comes calling for the gold. Breakker has Reed and Paul Heyman backing him. Knight is a loner, and Uso appears to be headed toward turning on his family. With Rollins gone, the Vision will likely add another member to strengthen their ranks–most likely a returning Theory or Dragunov when they are finally cleared. So, even if Breakker loses initially, he is bound to be fighting for the title multiple times, and Rollins’ spot will effectively and literally (as leader of the Vision) be his.
There is no better time, though, for WWE to pivot to Breakker. He should be the one to claim the gold and Raw’s top spot. While Punk just walked back into the WWE main event scene after leaving the company in 2014, Breakker has spent nearly five years putting in the work to earn his spot. He is electric in the ring, and the fans love him as a heel. It is time for WWE to finally strap a rocket to Breakker and see how far they can ride his success. Rollins labeled Breakker as the future of WWE. That future is now.
