WWE boss Triple H called WrestleMania 40 the biggest of all time, but was it really?

Tweeting 7 April, he writes, “The biggest tag team match of all time, at the biggest #WrestleMania of all time…HERE. WE. GO!”

The WrestleMania 40 attendance number is listed at 72,543, which is huge, but it’s not the biggest in WWE history. At WrestleMania 32 in 2016, 80,709 fans turned out to see Triple H take on Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

WrestleMania 40’s attendance is, however, the biggest since the concept of a ‘WrestleMania weekend’ was introduced in 2020, where the show now takes place over Saturday and Sunday.

WrestleMania is the biggest event on WWE’s calendar. For instance, at WrestleMania 34 in 2018, 78,133 fans filled the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in New Orleans.

WWE isn’t always 100% accurate in its reporting of attendance numbers, however. According to Dave Meltzer's Wrestling Observer Newsletter published April 2016, attendance figures given during broadcasts are "for entertainment purposes,” meaning they don’t always reflect the actual number.

In fact, according to Twitter account WrestleTix, only an estimated 68,412 tickets had been distributed for WrestleMania 40’s Saturday show - a far cry from Triple H’s stated figure of 72,543.

Nonetheless, WrestleMania 40 was a huge success, attracting millions of viewers from around the world. Cody Rhodes beat Roman Reigns in a main event which featured John Cena, The Undertaker, Seth Rollins, and The Rock.
