WWE 2K25 is getting more DLC than expected this month as El Grande Americano joined the virtual roster this week, ahead of the regularly scheduled pack dropping next week. Another unannounced update has indicated that there might be even more wrestlers coming to the game soon, and unlike all of the other DLC dropping in September, these ones will potentially be added to the game for free.
Usually, additional Superstars need to be paid for via DLC packs. However, clearly 2K wasn't clued in to the potential returns of Nikki Bella and Goldberg, both of whom have returned to WWE following the launch of 2K25. Although nothing official about their additions to the virtual roster has been mentioned, players have noticed their banners are already in there, waiting to be unlocked via The Island.

That's not confirmation that the Hall of Famers will be playable in WWE 2K25, but it would be odd to add cosmetics for them without including them on the roster. The banners in The Island also suggest that's the mode you'll need to play to unlock them. If that does turn out to be the case, it should mean that you won't have to pay extra to use them and that they can be unlocked through gameplay alone.
You will probably need a lot of VC, WWE 2K25's in-game currency to unlock them. That can be earned through gameplay alone, but can also be bought separately if you prefer.
That is very out of the ordinary for a WWE 2K game, but 2K25 is the first game in the series to include The Island. The developers behind the game are likely testing things out using the new mode, figuring out what works and what doesn't. If the ability to unlock new wrestlers gets more people playing the game and trying out The Island, it could be something it does more of in subsequent games.
It might also mean we see more of 2K adding wrestlers post-launch that signed with the company after the next game's cut-off. That has been an issue in the past, particularly when Cody Rhodes returned to WWE in 2022. WWE's requests to add Rhodes to 2K22 were shot down since the game had already been released by the time The American Nightmare redebuted at WrestleMania. That meant fans had to wait almost a whole year to play as Rhodes in a WWE game.
Adding new signings that miss that cut-off might be the way to go and a good workaround while not messing with DLC plans, which are also presumably set in stone at a certain point. That's unless someone who is supposed to be a part of the DLC gets cut. That happened in May's 2K25 DLC pack, and the unnamed star was replaced by El Grande Americano this week.
