The summer announcement felt huge, big enough to have a cinematic trailer featuring hip hop superstar Metro Boomin ending promising a part deux, Bad Blood would not only return after the show’s debut in ’97, but it would be in Atlanta, Georgia. It was the home of the first ever ‘Hell in a Cell’ match as well as the debut of Undertaker’s kayfabe brother, Kane.
WWE went out of their way to show respect to WCW in their territory, and after the brand has shown to remain strong in merch sales, but they also made sure they left room for the city’s Hip-Hop legends at the State Farm Arena. We got the part two Bad Blood trailer, although it felt like it was retconned a bit.
Cody Rhodes entered the ring with his hometown advantage felt loud as Pine Bluff’s Marching Band performed his theme music in a manner befitting the Georgia crowd. Not to be outdone, Roman Reigns also received live instrumentation to open his theme music. With the heels already in the ring, you would almost forget they received a full walkout.

Cole, on commentary, spoke about Cody’s father and Oley Anderson working together only to see Dusty betrayed, drawing parallels to the main event’s overarching narrative. All four men were lined up facing each other, but the crowd only chanted for their “OTC.” However, moments later, that chatter died down, and a ‘Cody’ chant picked up following a “Solo Sucks” anthem.
The bell rang before the faces could agree on who would start the match. Roman threw up his hands after asking Cody if he wanted to start the match and receiving a resounding ‘yes.’ The match had yet to start and it already felt like the heels had the advantage. There was some back and forth, but the next chapter of the match teased Roman’s physical encounter with Fatu. Solo would jump in to attack Roman before they could lock up, and the crowd reacted with boos before a “you can’t wrestle” chant started in the crowd. Roman would feed off the energy, like when Fatu slapped a ‘hold lock’ on Cody, and the restless crowd started chanting for Roman again. Still, it showed how The Bloodline worked together while the faces worked separately.
EYE FOR AN EYE.
AND A SPLASH FOR A SPLASH.#WWEBadBlood pic.twitter.com/QskOjj2fTi— WWE (@WWE) October 6, 2024
They did a great job of separating Roman and Fatu without making it feel obvious, but Fatu took every advantage he could to physically attack Roman. After Solo and Fatu landed a double super kick on Reigns, he and Cody worked on the outside. Fatu went through the timekeeper’s barrier and was then on the receiving end of the ‘Cross Rhodes.’
Cody set Fatu up on the commentary desk and saluted Roman before delivering a splash to the BL enforcer from the turnbuckle to the outside. In the match’s finale, the Tongas came out to give Solo and Fatu the edge, but they were not alone as a man in a hoody with a bandana covering his face would super kick the Tongas. He would reveal himself as the returning Jimmy Uso , once again aligned with the OTC, Reigns.

Roman and Cody would secure the victory following the reveal, and Jimmy and Roman would embrace with hugs and smiles while Cody sat in the corner with the title draped over his waist. Despite winning, Cody and Roman stood face to face, staring at one another to suggest their final showdown will come one day.
As Roman and Jimmy were leaving, Cody was attacked by The Bloodline, and Roman hesitated to help him while Jimmy vowed to follow his lead but reminded him that he had given the undisputed champion his word. Jimmy and Roman cleared the ring, and Roman ended up with the title in his hand. He held it for some time but eventually gave it back to Cody. That is when The Rock’s music hit, and the roof just blew off the place. With his slightly altered heelish music, the Rock stood at the entrance as the faces looked back in shock—mirroring CM Punk’s return nearing a year ago at Survivor Series.
IF YA SMELL…

The Rock said nothing. He simply counted to three with his fingers and then appeared to signal himself as ‘the fourth.’ With three faces in the ring still outnumbered by The Bloodline, is The Rock signaling his place in this feud, or is it more cryptic than that?
With the 53rd Hell in the Cell taking place tonight at the show for which it debuted, it still does not get old hearing the metrics of chain link and steel—the five tons of it would cause an immediate cut on Punk at the beginning. The cage lowered with that eerie music, something Punk has not heard since his last HIAC match against Ryback in 2012.
Punk was able to lift Drew without it looking like his knee was going to cave in, so that was a plus, but was it smart to put the most injured guy on the roster through some of the spots he endured? For example, in a spot where both men were on each side of the turnbuckle facing each other as each stood on the outside apron, McIntyre suplexed Punk onto a table outside of the ring after lifting him from a ‘floor deadlift’ – that’s to say, Punk was deadweight when the massively strong Drew lifted him over his shoulder.

The worst moment of the match was when McIntyre pump faked the thumbtacks spot. He brought the infamous black bag out, and it certainly felt like it was the time for the tacks, but it also felt too obvious in the moment, and Drew had this look like the ‘swerve was in.’ When Drew unleashed the bag, it was a bunch of beads—the kind you’d use to make the ‘family bracelet’ that has been, for better or worse, the crux of their feud in the back half.
This moment was brilliant, and the troll move tracked, but then Drew attempted the Claymore he’d landed earlier on the outside, and when Punk moved at the last second, McIntyre landed on his lower back on the edge of the steel stairs that Drew himself ushered into the ring. This was also great and produced really well, but in a moment where we needed to be unsure of the ‘seriousness’ of Drew’s back injury, we saw the ref, and Drew squeezed hands in the center frame.
Obviously, it is great to know when a spot went ‘as planned,’ but in the moment, it takes you out of it. Punk poured the beads into Drew’s mouth and hit the GTs, once again without issue, and that was the finish. Oh yeah, and CM Punk disgraced Bret Hart’s name with one of the botchiest-looking Sharpshooter attempts in recent memory.
Epic. Simply EPIC.#WWEBadBlood pic.twitter.com/9KU3LiAU1u

CM Punk took the win, but it did not feel like the finish was appropriate. Punk deserves to get over on anyone in the locker room, but the sense this made for the ‘old’ and beat-up Punk to win the match without having to go to a ‘bad’ place leaves McIntyre in weirder place.

The two veterans left it all in the ring with their finale, and both women raised the bar in a match that had the crowd on their feet. It was clear the pair felt like they had something to prove. Why else attempt a Bayley powerbomb effort reversed into a ‘Hurricanrana’ by NIA JAX? While that did not hit perfectly, many things did, and the match felt big thanks to the crowd’s ability to recognize when performers are delivering something special.
Of course, the match’s climax was laid out perfectly for the finish as Tiffany Stratton’s music hit as she rushed to the ring to help Jax, but by then, she was downed following Jax landing on top of the ref after a kick from Bayley. Stratton tried to help by reviving the ref, but at that moment, Jax arose like the Undertaker with a juiced-up urn. From Jax’s perspective, it looked like Tiffy was calling for her ‘time’ by cashing in the Money in the Bank Briefcase that grants her a title shot at any time. Stratton would end up being the difference in the end even if it was more complicated than the heels had hoped.
The superstars in this match did their job as the second match on the card following a marquee opener, but then they raised the bar on it. They kept the crowd engaged in a situation that many (men and women) would have crapped the bed. Congrats to both women, though we’ll never get to see Jax thank Bayley for helping to deliver a championship quality match. BUT… the time is ticking on Tiffy.

At this point in the show, it really felt like the momentum was not in favor of a match based on a feud that has felt stale in recent weeks. This program’s silliness, which was once a charming theme, now only worked to underscore the famous adage: easier to get heat than to keep it.
A segment featuring Metro Boomin with Jade Cargill and Binca Belair hanging out in a smoked filled greenroom mingling WWE superstars with Hip-Hop’s biggest acts like Lil Baby, Quavo, and Lil Yachty took place before the match, and it felt cut premature—never a good feeling heading into the marquee match of a PLE.

Rhea performed well, as did Liv, but the crowd did not come to life until Dom ‘picked the lock’ only to tangle himself up and fall from the cage—luckily for Dom, his ankle was tied up, and he was left ripe for the hitting. In a funny moment, kind of, Rhea told the ref she needed a minute and grabbed a kendo stick, to which the ref responded, ‘sure, you deserve that.’ This left Dom as a de facto ‘pinata,’ and Rhea let that stick go like Chipper Jones. Taste of all the innuendos placed on Dom tonight aside, it was certainly the climax of the match. Many booked the potential return of Charlotte Flair, but it would end up being a returning Raquel Rodriguez who interfered, causing the DQ.
This was mid from a feud that had been the hottest of the summer.
It is unfortunate that the tag titles continue to get zero love on PLEs, but the former Judgement Day bros faced off in a blood feud that could have benefited from a clearer presentation of motive. The match was great, in fact, if not predictable in booking, and yet Finn still outperformed his booking. Priest won despite JD’s interference, but the entire segment felt like it could have been booked on RAW and not like the climax of a months-long feud.
GUNTHER just called out GOLDBERG at #WWEBadBlood! pic.twitter.com/AOv2Xj5dGd
— WWE (@WWE) October 6, 2024
The heavyweight champion from the red brand came out and cut a devastatingly great promo for Bill Goldberg , who was in the audience as part of the WCW Legends and getting some shine in the ATL. Gunther made waves a few weeks ago when he told Bret Hart that Goldberg, the man that ended Bret’s career and caused much anguish for the ‘Hitman,’ was a hero of his.
Gunther, who many fans unfairly claim cannot cut promos, told Goldberg that he lied about him being a hero of his, “how could a one-trick pony like [Goldberg]” be a hero of the premier wrestler in WWE today? He then directed his promo at Goldberg’s son, Gage Goldberg, who plays linebacker for Coach Prime at Colorado, and said he ‘hopes Goldberg is a better father than he was wrestler,’ and that caused Goldberg to jump the barrier.
Nearly a dozen WWE security staffers stood between the retired wrestler, always on the cusp of a return, and the champ, but that is when Sami Zayn came out to attack Gunther. The segment was meant to get over the title match between Gunther and Zayn, and it worked very well, making the match booked for RAW feel bigger and raising the stakes.
