When Liv Morgan was ruled out with a dislocated shoulder for the foreseeable future, it wasn’t just a blow for WWE Evolution 2025. It caused a major headache for an already faltering women’s tag team division.
Fans will have to go back to WWE circa-Clash at the Castle to find the last period of significant and interesting action in the division. The three-way tag match that saw the Unholy Union win the titles on home soil in Scotland provided a window into the promise the division held last year. Fast forward to now, and Isla Dawn and Shayna Baszler are no longer with the company, and Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill have now gone their separate ways following Naomi’s ambush on the latter.
Recent tag team storylines have used the division to maintain the profiles of leading names that aren’t currently involved in the singles title picture. While it was entertaining on some level to watch Belair and Naomi feud with Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez, it provided almost zero promise for the division’s long-term storytelling. With Morgan now sidelined, replaced by an emerging Roxanne Perez, WWE has a chance to resurrect the women’s tag division.
The announcement of a four-way tag match at WWE Evolution 2025 for the titles is a great way to make the championship meaningful again. Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair earned the SmackDown slot last week, while representatives from NXT have yet to be confirmed. The challengers from Raw also remain uncertain.
And with that in mind, who looks best placed to seize that opportunity from the Raw women’s roster?
The veteran and two-time world champion Natalya begrudgingly took Maxxine Dupri under her wing earlier this year. Natalya and Dupri even made their tag team debut in April on SmackDown, being defeated by Lyra Valkyria and Bayley during a gauntlet match. Since then, the pair have consistently appeared backstage in vignettes with Sheamus and Akira Tozawa, suggesting that their story is far from over.
Besides Rodriguez and Perez, Natalya and Dupri present the only semblance of a tag team on the Raw roster currently. In reality, the only thing stopping them from challenging would be the formation of an impromptu tag team.
Since missing out on Queen of the Ring glory at Night of Champions, it’s unclear what Asuka does next. Since her long injury layoff, Damage CTRL has quietly disbanded. Iyo Sky has ascended to main event status while Dakota Kai has been released.
Similarly to Asuka, Kairi Sane has just returned from injury and also remains without a solid storyline. With Sane confirmed to be facing Roxanne Perez on WWE Raw tonight, the stars could be aligning for a Damage CTRL reunion.
Part of Asuka’s quality is her versatility. The Empress of Tomorrow won tag team titles all over Japan before coming to WWE a decade ago. Since joining the company, she’s won the tag team titles four times with an array of diverse partners, including Sane, Charlotte Flair, and Alexa Bliss.
Asuka also memorably won the first season of the Mixed Match Challenge with The Miz in 2018. While many of the women without a set match (Asuka included) will most likely find themselves competing in the battle royal at Evolution 2025, Asuka presents a viable candidate to secure a surprise partner for the four-way tag match. With former partners Flair and Bliss in the opposite corner, it would be a great way to revisit those alliances and rivalries.
As recently as 2023, Becky Lynch won the tag team titles with Hall of Famer Lita. And the feat could credibly be repeated at WWE Evolution 2025. Trish Stratus has already been confirmed for a world title shot at Tiffany Stratton, and the previous Evolution event saw the likes of Mickie James and the aforementioned Stratus and Lita make appearances. Nikki Bella looked likely to challenge Liv Morgan in some form prior to her injury.
Could a return for The Bella Twins, and possibly tag team gold, be on the cards?
