John Cena will be competing in his final match this Saturday at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event, but his retirement isn't the only event that will be taking place at Capital One Center in Washington, D.C. Cena pushed for the next generation to be featured on the show, and this has resulted in exhibition matches being booked.
One of those sees AJ Styles and Dragon Lee defending their World Tag Team Championships against NXT star Je'Von Evans and TNA X-Division Champion Leon Slater. WWE's partnership with TNA has seen wrestlers from both companies appear in both promotions this year.
Slater will be making another appearance in WWE, having been featured on NXT regularly in recent months. He was a participant in the Iron Survivor Challenge at NXT Deadline last weekend, which was won by Evans, who became the number one contender for Oba Femi's NXT Championship.
But WWE are continuing to use Slater, and the Brit will be in action on Saturday, which means he was pulled from shows with European promotions wXw and RevPro. But it wasn't WWE who informed the two independent promotions that the TNA star would no longer be appearing at their upcoming shows.
According to Fighful Select, WWE left it to Slater to withdraw from the promotion's shows, and this didn't go down well with wXw. It's claimed that the 21-year-old had "scheduling" issues, but his appearance had been agreed since March, and the late withdrawal has led to much frustration.
While wXw "expected" Slater to be pulled from their shows once the Saturday Night's Main Event match was announced, they were disappointed that WWE didn't give them the heads-up, leaving the performer in an "unfortunate position".
Slater was unable to explain to fans and or the promoter why he was withdrawing, and the last-minute change comes at a difficult time for wXw, as their show is one of their biggest of the year. Given that the TNA star is one of pro wrestling's most exciting rising stars, it's disappointing for the German promotion to have to deal without him.
WWE have used their partnership with TNA to lure two talents to the company, and that includes Joe Hendry and Jordynne Grace. Both made the switch from TNA to WWE and are currently competing in NXT.
Slater's contract is set to expire next year, and reports claim WWE is eyeing him as a potential signing. The fact that he has been booked on Cena's farewell show indicates just how highly the company regards him, as they are showcasing a TNA star on one of the biggest nights of the year.
This Saturday's tag match could steal the show, given it includes four of the most talented high-flyers in the business. It won't be the first time Slater and Evans team up as they have formed a tag team and competed on NXT.
