It’s been well over 1400 days since AJ Styles last held a championship in WWE. ‘The Phenomenal One’ once held the WWE Championship for 371 days and was the consensus face of the promotion. However, his recent run with the company has been underwhelming, with little title success. And considering he’s in the twilight of his illustrious wrestling career, he doesn’t have that many opportunities left to go after those belts either. But guess what? It seems like there’s finally a silver lining for the former TNA World Champion.
Per WrestleVotes, WWE is reportedly planning to have Dominik Mysterio defend his Intercontinental Championship against ‘Mr. TNA’ at the first-ever 2-Night SummerSlam PLE in New Jersey. For the unversed, this feud kicked off prior to the Backlash in May. Styles trespassed the Judgment Day clubhouse to warn Mysterio that he would be coming after that IC title no matter what.
At the time, ‘Dirty Dom’ was feuding with Penta. They went to war at Backlash, but the former AEW star lost his first-ever singles match on a WWE PLE due to El Grande Americano’s interference. After that, Styles entered the fray and was on a manhunt for Mysterio and his crew. However, the Styles/Mysterio contest for the IC title kept on getting pushed back.

The highly anticipated clash was made official for Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia. In the following week, the fans learned that the showdown was scrapped following an undisclosed injury sustained by Mysterio. At first, it appeared like the injury angle was part of the storyline. However, some media reports claimed that Rhea Ripley‘s on-screen ex partially damaged his ribs.
Dominik: "AJ, read the doctor’s note. I’m injured, I’m not cleared. Doctor’s orders. You wanna put on your glasses and read?"

AJ Styles: "Yup, right here. Doctor says you’re a punkass."

But that wouldn’t keep the San Diego native away from in-ring action for long. On this week’s Raw, Styles ran into ‘Dirty Dom’ backstage and demanded his title match. The Judgment Day member retorted with an Adam Pearce-ratified medical report stating that he would need some more time to receive medical clearance.
AJ Styles hasn’t tasted singles gold for almost five years. In August 2020, he lost the Intercontinental Championship to Jeff Hardy . And Styles has now found an opening to win it back from Dominik Mysterio if everything goes well. ‘The Face that Runs the Place’ will have to nullify the menace of Judgment Day. What could possibly work against Styles is the fact that every member of the villainous faction is draped in gold at the moment.
On this week’s Raw, Finn Balor and JD McDonagh reclaimed the world tag team titles from Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston. Moreover, after Liv Morgan‘s unfortunate absence due to a shoulder dislocation, Roxanne Perez has been accepted into the group as her replacement. She’s now one-half of the women’s tag team champions with Raquel Rodriguez.
The Judgment Day is the most dangerous not when they have all the titles, but when they are on the same page. Even though Mysterio and Balor have had many tense faceoffs in recent months, it seems that the stable members are at peace for now. But it would be interesting to see if the first-ever Universal Champion would casually forget about Mysterio pinning him at WrestleMania 41 to win the IC title belt. But apart from Mysterio, can Styles face another foe from the past?
Last month, AJ Styles turned 48 years old. It simply means that he has less than a couple of years left inside the squared circle. The Georgia native has already set an upper time limit on his days as an active pro wrestler. Not that long ago, he told wrestling journalist Chris Van Vliet that he would retire from this sport before turning 50.
Styles’ ongoing beef with Dominik Mysterio could very well be one of the few remaining chances for the veteran to add more to his repertoire. If, for some reason, the Jacksonville-born wrestler fails to grab it, he might chase the world title before calling it a day. In the aforementioned interview with Van Vliet, Styles talked about possibly wrestling John Cena one last time.
For the unversed, Cena and Styles had an iconic trilogy of matches spread across 2016-17 at Money in the Bank, SummerSlam, and finally at the Royal Rumble, where Cena won his 16th World title. ‘The Cenation Leader’ has dispatched the likes of Randy Orton and CM Punk in his farewell tour until now. Styles could join that list too if WWE plans to pit him against the ‘Last Real Champion’ anytime soon.
