After nearly 25 years, John Cena will wrestle his final WWE match this Saturday, December 13, at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Fans and fellow wrestlers have been paying tribute to the 17-time world champion all month long. WWE has officially bestowed on Cena the designation of "Greatest of All Time," and with his recent efforts to leave the business better than he found it, he's proving why.
According to Bryan Alvarez, Cena's match is scheduled to open Saturday Night's Main Event. This report comes as a surprise to many fans who naturally expected Cena's final match to be the main event.
Here are my predictions for how Saturday's card will be structured.
Throughout the Farewell Tour, Cena has often been placed in the first segment of the show. If the reports are accurate, his match with GUNTHER will have a similar feel to Cena's appearances in Boston, Chicago, and Madison Square Garden. The pre-show will be filled with all of the tributes and hype, then with the crowd at their best, Cena will kick off the show.
With this format, expect Cena and GUNTHER to take as much time as they want, with Cena calling the spots in the ring.
This veteran and rising star combo will be in the same spot Trish Stratus, Jazz, and Lita were at WrestleMania 18: following the hottest match of the night. Someone has to do it, though. The good news is that while this match is important, it's not connected to a major rivalry or championship, so the fact that Sol Ruka is on the show at all will be a win.
By this point, fans in the arena and at home (who are still watching) will be emotionally prepared to invest in another match. These are four of the most exciting performers to watch in the industry, and they will put on a fast-paced, yet psychologically sound match. Expect several "this is awesome" chants from the fans in D.C.
When the WWE vs. NXT Champion match was announced, I did not expect it to be the main event. However, it makes sense. Cena has requested that the night be about the future. There's no better way to honor that than by closing the show with QB1 and a future WrestleMania main eventer.
After the match, I think Cody will initiate a final Cena tribute that will involve the locker room and legends filing out to honor The Greatest of All Time.
Cena's match might open the show, but his tribute will close it.
